Checking Hydraulic Fluid Level

I am new to tractor ownership and have a previously owned MF GC2300. Can someone please tell me when to check the hydraulic fluid? Check before starting or after warm up? My sight glass. before start up shows approx. 1/4 full and I don't want to overfill or run below a safe level. The owner manual does not specify. Thanks for any help.
