As long as it is not foaming then you are ok , some people get the John Deere hydraulic fluid dye so they can see it easier.

That would be handy. It's super hard to see on the stick. The wooden dowel works well but its a one time use.

Strange that it would show less while hot and show more while cold since liquid expands with heat but if it is it is. I usually feel of the dip stick (sliding my fingers down from the top) since I have trouble seeing it.

I'm learning on this thread as well. I think some overfilled will not damage your mower but you can simply consider the average.
