A wimp for wearing gloves? Actually now if you are a mechanic, it is cool to wear gloves. We look at the guys that don't as neanderthals. I wore the yellow dishwashing gloves 20 years ago before they had these nice latex and nitrile gloves. I was ridiculed. "Hey, you going to wash the dishes." I heard it all the time. Now I see everybody doing it. I have to admit, the only reason I did it back then was to protect the finish on the necks of my guitars. They were starting to discolor until I wore the gloves in work. After that, they never discolored.

A trick I learned is that you grab the filter by the open end with the gloves on, take your other hand and remove the glove stretching it down over the filter, now do the same with the other glove going the other way. Now, no oil spills out of the filter.

thats about the truth.

the old guys dont wear gloves, I'd hazard a guess that everybody under 30 does.

I got a feeling they tell em to wear em in school now, they didn't know or tell us about all the crud in used oil in the old days.

what else did everybody use to do.... wash in the gunk tank, now the guys wear gloves when they wash parts...

guys wear dust masks when they work on brakes or change dusty filters, another relatively new protection.

how about guys wearing ear muffs around noisy diesels. I worked in a dyno and was the only one who wore em some of the time. everybody else just said WHAT?

I've known old timers who would wash their hands with gumout

times they are a changing.

I cant work with gloves, cant stand em.

I use surgeon's or nitrile gloves while changing oil. Often only put on only one hand. Most of the techs at the local Benz dealership use gloves while working on the cars. I also use ear muffs, because I've had the stapes replaced on both ears now.

By the way, the reason most dealers use suction equipment for removing old oil is because Benzes have panels installed as air smoothers underneath the engine. It's not just saving time in removing the drain bolt; it's also time saved in removing and replacing that panel. I had a Fiat once that also had a panel that was in the way of draining the oil. Would have saved time and trouble to suction out the oil. You can buy approximately 2 gallon suction containers from a number of different sources. I also have a hand suction pump that would work that I bought years ago from Brookstone. If I get a car with one of those panels installed, I'll buy a suction container device.

I'm with KICK, I can't stand gloves. Having spent many years as a mechanic I never found much use in them. Working on the trucks I worked on I would have needed a body glove to keep the oil off my skin. Some day's my cloths were so covered in oil and grease that it had soaked through and my leg's and chest would be black with oil when I got home. The tiny amount I would have kept off my hands by wearing gloves really didn't seem to matter since I was covered from head to toe. Having said that I never had a problem with people that did wear them. Whatever floats your boat. If your not a grease monkey at heart I recomend gloves. :D

I wear a latex glove on the hand I use to remove the drain plug and filter. Didn't wear them for years but I've realized how hard it is on my hands. Not only health, but the stains and smell doesn't wash out very fast either.

I can't tell you how many times my hands would be clean from wearing gloves, but I would have grease all the way into my armpits.

have grease all the way into my armpits.

That's from letting the oil run down your gloves when doing a change!:D :D :D

Ahhh... nothing beats gas running down into your armpits when dropping a tank for a fuel pump! You might not know it's running down your arms.... but once it hits your armpit you'll know!! Ouch!!

although gas burns a bit, IMHO nuthing is better than a mix of diesel fuel and antifreeze running inside your shirt.

at least gas evaporates after awhile. LOL.
