Having grown up with Chickens....my suggestion to all of the suggestions....don't ever get Chickens!! :) They poop all over, are hard as all get out to keep penned in....and predators REALLY LOVE THEM. Hawks, coyotes, weasels, HMMMMM just about anything loves Chickens.

However if you love chicken poop tracked into your house, and lice infesting your coop....oh I could go on.....then by all means get chickens.

Did I mention I don't like Chickens....don't like to eat them....don't like growing them....and don't like burning all the pin feathers off of them when you slaughter them and after you have plucked them. :D

Out of curiousity Davitk, how is it possible you not know a chicken is dead? I would continue on with your story of air escaping lungs, kind of like Princess Bride when Wesley was only "mostly dead, he clearly said to blave, which we all know means to bluff......" You had a mostly dead chicken. Too funny.

Let the record show that WarrenF is not a fan of chickens.

Yeah, I don't know how old is too old to butcher and eat, but I guess I would find out. I guess the other thing is, when I can get more chickens I could ge straight run and butcher the roosters at 5-6 months.

I have found mostly that I don't feel I need to season, salt mostly, the farm fresh eggs as much. Now we refrigerate them right away and I heard if you don't refrigerate them, they stay good for a few weeks on the counter, that the taste is different. So tastewise, seasoning is the difference for me. But they sure do look different.

Yep.. if you hatch your own.. or by mixed.. you almost always end up with extra roosters... at most ya only need 1 for a couple dozen chickens if ya plan on raising any.. the rest can be friers!

We used to have funerals  dug graves, built crosses......

Thought I had buried one alive once. Dropped her in the hole, hole was a little snug so I gave her a push with the shovel, she SQUAWKED

I maintain to this day that it was just air escaping as her lungs were compressed.

Yep.. that happens.. turkies do it too.

I also think that Warren was traumatized by chickens as a youth, maybe chased by chickens when he was small. That much angst must be explained by something as a young man. Just kidding Warrenf.

my wife ran the geriatric ward. when they died, she laid a bath towel on the bird so it would not get cannibalized (another story). My job was just to dig the hole :D

I talked to one guy that said he bought hens every spring and then in the fall after the new chickens were laying he'd butcher last year's hens so he wouldn't have to feed as many over the winter. Seems like a good plan to me, I might just try it.

So he's butchering 1.5 year olds then? Not a bad plan.

Exactly. I could see getting 25 chickens every spring, then butchering the roosters when they're big enough (mid-summer) for the frying pan, then butchering last year's hens in the fall for roasting or soup. Seems like you'd end up with about a dozen new laying hens every year and a pretty good stream of different kinds of meat.
