The whole brooder thing has me completely lost.

When you set yours up, could you please post some pics of it. The more I read, the less I know.

Toro,

Thanks for the link. My eyes are opening up and I'm seeing things that I never thought about. I really like the dog kennel brooder, but also the plastic tubs lood good too!!! I was going to make one out of OSB, but for what I can buy a plastic tub for, it doesn't make sense to make anything.

No problem Eddie,
Its the least I could do after all I have learned from you. I was thinking about using a dog kennel as well, but up here in MI I think it would be too drafty without reinforcing the walls to keep the air out. So I think I will be using a plastic tote as well. Cheap and easy.

I've got one that has an eg turner.. then after they hatch. I put them in the next box that helps keep them warm till they can go into a pen..

Tony, if you are still checking this thread, mypetchicken.com has a minimum of I think 3-4 chickens. You end up paying more than buying 25 from another hatchery because of shipping and warmers to make sure the chickens live, but I know you were looking for a smaller amount of chickens.

I am hoping to get to tractor supply next week early to get all the supplies for my brooder and talk to whoever is in charge of ordering chicks. I want to pick his/her brain about what they will have and if breeds will be identifiable. If not, I want to see if they will add the chicks I want onto their first order, which now is supposed to be coming March 17th.

I was looking in the farm+garden section of craigslist this morning and found 2 people within 2 hours of me selling all kinds of chicks for $1. If I can't get what I want at the feed store or Rural King, I may go with one of these 2 people. You guys might want to look into that. Save money on the chicks and maybe on shipping, depending on how close you are to the seller.

I have looked into that, all of them are straight run though. If I can't get what I want from Tractor Supply I may see if those people have a couple that are old enough to sex them.

It's a perfect opportunity to read up on sexing chicks and give it a try. My cousin tried it last year and got about half of them right, not bad for a first try.

Boy, I hope that doesn't get tagged as not 'family friendly'!

Unfortunately I really can't have a rooster. I live in a very urban neighborhood and although the dogs around here bark incessantly I don't think people would understand a rooster, plus I want the eggs, so I am trying for the most liklihood of getting all hens. We will see.
