Does requiring the use of certain monikers actually impart respect?

Not the point, which you clearly know since you beg the question. Its for their benefit, not mine. One should learn the rhythms and conventions of respect to one's elders regardless of one's true feelings... its part of society and life. The child who is not taught these simple truths will be disadvantaged later on.

And how would someone 'exploit' the use of a proper title for an elder? Simply nonsensical.

I agree and the fact that we are losing that tradition here in the UK is contributing to the growing lack of respect for elders.

I agree with this, especially with younger children. If they call you sir/ ma'am/ mr. x/ mrs. x that doesn't mean they respect you, just that they were told to do so. Same as if they don't, it doesn't mean they don't respect you just that they weren't instructed to do so. This reflects more on the parents then on the child's level of respect for people.

I can agree with that. I don't expect my nieces and nephews to call me uncle. Heck I have a nephew that is almost as old as I am. As far as the parents teaching there kids to be polite. I have a nephew with two daughters, and a son that when you do something for all of them is "Thaaaannnnkkkk yyyyoooouuuu uuuunnnnncccccllllllleeeee raaaaannnnnndddddddyyyyyy, all at the same time. After the third time it started to feel irritating and disrespectful.

Uh, do you know what "begging the question" means LMan1967? I assumed nothing in the question.

Rigid imposition of ceremony in addressing an elder, which is what we are talking about, does not equate to respect for that elder. IMHO, demanding the adherence to that ceremony is often inefficacious in the general population. Military protocol is a whole different ballgame because the ceremony is important to the function of the whole unit.

Post #23 is an example of the younger person exploiting the ceremony, even if the older person misinterprets the ceremony as showing "respect."

kids these days have no respect becuase teachers tell them they can call the police on their parents if they ever get spanked. I know this for real. These kids need a good punch to the balls

I have mixed feelings about "spanking" kids. When I was a kid in school, it wasn't unusual for teachers to spank kids, and they needed to, but my Dad didn't believe in "spanking" kids or raising his voice; he believed in saying something once quietly, and then just beatin' the you know what out of any kid that failed to respond as he thought the kid should have. In this day and age, anyone who did it the way he did would go to prison.

Our youngest daughter and her husband are now foster parents and have an 8 year old girl and her soon to be 6 year old brother, and the foster parenting program prohibits spanking of any kind.

Jmurray01.....I read the Daily Mail from the UK everyday and many stories refer to crimes committed by " YOBS " I take it this refers to young people...but what exactly does YOB stand for or mean...also the term; Put Off...does that mean fired...? I ask this because I more and more believe we speak American here...and you speak English there..Know what I mean...? there are huge differences in spelling of many words and pronunciation and word themselves....Thanks

I don't believe "yob" is an acronym, it is just a word for, I quote "A rude, noisy, and aggressive young man".

As for "put off", that just means to postpone as far as I'm aware.

OK - thanks...I have wondered that for the longest time...makes sense, now I can wonder about something else like why you folks call it " take away " and we call it " Carry Out " or why you call a car a " Lorry " and gas " Petrol " Do you see my point....we can't both be speaking English on both sides of the Pond....Can we ? :)
