Chinese clone engines, the good bad and the ugly

   / Chinese clone engines, the good bad and the ugly #101
Long time no see Keymosabee...
I need parts for my 13 HP Cloan.

I do have the poop on it;

CHINA XINGYUE GROUP
6CXGS 3892GA EM

13 HP Motor Group (That is what it says on the decal on the recoil starter rope cover)

I have a CARROLL STREAM MOTOR COMPANY 13HP Honda Cloan Engine. It is a;
6CXGS 3892GA EM CHINA XINGYUE GROUP

I need;

Carburetor and Gaskets
Air Filter w/ foam cover.
In-line fuel filter and clamps.
Spark Plug

BRAD

Hopefully resolved now, but in case not....

I get in there less often these days (not my favourite vendor) but I was surprised at the amount of Chinese carb parts that the big regional powersports retailer had out on the floor the last time I was in there. That underlined to me how many of those clones are in our markets here.

If still an issue, perhaps some of the bigger powersport shops out your way are worth checking out. I take no responsibility for any large $ purchases you end up hauling away ;) though.

Good morning, Folks!
Found you while looking for a replacement engine for my riding mower.
It's an older John Deere, with the Kohler Command 13 engine.
Is there a direct replacement clone that will bolt right in?
I'm a pretty fair parts changer, less fair mechanic!:laughing:
Was kind of surprised that a new Kohler engine cost the same
as a new (home depot) riding mower! And the new mowers seem to
have gears/trans. issues according to reviews.
Seeing as this machine is tried/true for mowing about 1 acre property
I think I'd like to keep it running.
Any help is certainly appreciated!

Disclaimer - while I've worked on plenty of equipment, I've never touched a riding mower. So.... I'm only guessing that yours will be a vertical shaft motor.....

I've had their horiz. shaft motors in mind for a rainy day project, just checked, they do have a larger vertical Predator.

22 HP (78cc) V-Twin Vertical Shaft Gas Engine EPA

No idea how well it would bolt up to your mower; if they have the Predator manual online, it may have a useful mech drawing to check.

Haven't used a Predator yet, but have noticed that they mostly get positive reviews.

Thank you Dave
That's a real good starting point. I'll pull the old motor and start comparing specs.
Of course, first thing I noticed is the "not for sale in California" notice at bottom of ad :mur::laughing:
Good thing my Inlaws live in Nevada! Just have to keep them supplied in shipping labels (and smoked salmon) :)

Didn't notice that you are in Cali..... guess it won't be long before you have to walk everywhere, and eat the grass you can't cut. Sadly, I'm likely only a few years behind you :rolleyes: .....

I've made the drive to upstate NY for various things that I can't get here; well, unless I wanted to pay a king's ransom. Shipping is pretty inexpensive within the USA, so that should be doable for you.

Let us know how the Predator looks for your application. A lot of the new stuff seems to be made out of tinfoil, I suspect that you aren't the only person on here looking to re-power something older.

Well actually.... the traffic is so bad sometimes it's faster to walk, they tell us we can't grow grass because of the drought(----unless it's medical grass. That's o.k.:laughing:) even though I'm pretty sure that's what they're serving for dinner in a lot of restaurants around here, so yeah we have to eat the grass but we PAY for it :eek:
But the weather is nice. :)

I think it's a Left Coast thing.... friends just moved to BC, after living in Ontario all their lives. On exploratory trips the last couple of years, they noticed that in many places people smoked weed everywhere, but if you pulled out a cigarette to light, they looked at you like you were a serial killer....

You have some nice coastal areas there. I've driven from San Jose to Monterey, and on another trip, drove from San Fran up to Mendocino. Just a couple of days, tacked onto business trips..... I'd like to get back your way in an RV when I have weeks to play with.....

Good luck with the mower project, and let us know how it goes.

Small Engine Repower Kits - John Deere, Briggs & More - Repower Specialists I've never had anything to do with this buisness but If the advertizing is true then one of the kits puts you well on your way into a new motor.

pmsmechanic-
Thanks for the link.
Filled out their form and submitted it, we'll see what they have to offer.

Well, the link that pmsmechanic supplied (repower specialists ltd.) called me this morning as well as sending an email! Points for that.
He said the "bolt right in replacement" that they have is a Briggs and Stratton Intek 19hp motor for $695 (consumer rated motor). From the kohler spec # he had narrowed down the application to one
of two J.D. riding mower models, and when I told him which model I had, he told me about the need to alter the heat shield on it when installing the Briggs motor.
Prompt, knowledgeable, polite. Great business model! So seldom happens these days that it really stands out :laughing:
We're off to a good start!

Edit: He did say that the kohler was a commercial rated motor, but that replacement was over $1800.
