Chinese PTO 6\" Chipper Problem

I have been using the chipper for about 5 hours. Then it clogged just at the chute entrance. Maybe I overloaded it. I opened it and removed the debris and chipped away again. After a while it happened again I cleaned the chute entrance again but it keeps clogging all the time now. It seems that it is not sucking the chips in the chute anymore.

Anyone seen the problem? Any ideas why it is happening?

Re: Chinese PTO 6\" Chipper Problem

I don't know just how much you cleaned besides the intake chute, and I don't know what kind of material your chipping, but I'll guess it's one of two things:

1. Debris, such as stringy pieces of wood fiber, built up on the knives, or
2. Dull knives.

I'd be inclined to suspect #1 since you say you've only used it 5 hours.

Re: Chinese PTO 6\" Chipper Problem

first what kind of wood are you chipping? rotted wood does not chip
well. pine with heavy tar will stick on the inside when you load it up
fast. i would sharpen the blades, on mine 1 set was sharp ,1 was not.Now the big question is the infeed roller working?

Re: Chinese PTO 6\" Chipper Problem

When the feed clogs and stops it is because the drive belt is slipping. Do this a few times, it probably loosens up with the heat and strain - I know mine has started to do that. Maybe you need to just tighten the feed drive belt and your infeed problems with be solved. I was going to service mine soon, including changing the oil in the feed gearbox, adjust, the belt, and lube all the fittings.

Re: Chinese PTO 6\" Chipper Problem

I have just started using my chipper. I found that the spacing on the anvil was way off. It tended to send long slivers out the chute. Some long stings were wrapped around the main shaft. It never clogged but I could see how it would. I haven't been able to try it since setting the anvil back to .030. I did have a rental clog when I fed pulled bedding plants through it. I know I'm a bad boy but "it was a rental".

Re: Chinese PTO 6\" Chipper Problem

Well, just to clarify: I am not chopping rotten wood, or stringy grasses. The chips I am removing when the chute is clogged are small, good sized chips. Also, I do not have problems with the feed roller. Actually, I am chipping the same stuff as at the beginning when the chipper work good. The first time it clogged I probably overloaded the chipper. Now I suspect it has something to do with suction and it started when I opened it and cleaned the chute the first time.

Re: Chinese PTO 6\" Chipper Problem

It sounds like you overloaded it the first time and heated up that cheap chinese belt. I did the same thing on mine after about 2 hours. Just cut that cheap belt off, buy a Gates greenstripe and I bet your problem will be over.

Re: Chinese PTO 6\" Chipper Problem

If I understand your problem correctly you are saying that the discharge chute is clogging. Is this the case? If so it shouldn't unless you are chipping heavy wet pine or the such. I have been running mine quite hard (semi-commercial) since I have bought it and have never cloged it once. I have burnt the feed roller belt but it was my own fault. Here are my thoughts or questions, which way do you have the chute installed - if you are standing facing the feed hopper the discharge chute should be directed to your right. The only other thing it could be is something stuck in the discharge chute - a branch which would be obvious or something is bent on the chute. What are you running it with - HP Tractor? If tractor you are using doesn't have the power to keep the chipper flywheel spinning at the rate it needs to this could also cause it to clog up. Just my thoughts - hope this helps & let us know how you make out.
