So, in summary, can I ask whether you recommend the Mac 122 chipper/shredder after your experiences. What would you buy if you had to do it again? Thanks

I think if you look, you will find the hole. On mine it is covered by a black plate which must be removed, then you rotate the assembly to the bar in question and slide it out the hole toward the tractor end.

If you are facing the chipper from the PTO side of the chipper, the plate is low on the right side.

I'd still buy the TPH-122. In fact, a master gardener friend of mine just bought one, too, after hearing about mine. What I was looking for here (and haven't gotten it) was some experiences with other chippers about how they are to sharpen the blades, rebuild the hammer assembly, etc.

Still waiting for something from MacKissic on how to do the hammer assemblies, as the owner's manual plain doesn't tell you. It does tell you about removing and replacing the chipper blade. They treated me pretty good when I called them about an owner's manual for the MacKissic that I had for the Gravely. They sent me an owner's manual for it. Never did use it enough to rebuilt the hammer assembly on it, and it did not have a chipper.

Bot MacKissics are smoother-running units than the TroyBilt Tomahawk. The Tomahawk is a real beast to the ears, vibrates a little bit. It'll rip stuff right out of your hands when you stick it into the upper chute (I put slit rubber heater hose around the top of the chute to keep from bruising my arms on it; have done the same with the MacKissic, but it doesn't "grab" stuff so hard as the TroyBilt does).

It's American and been around for a long time. Hope they don't get bought out like TroyBilt did.
