Just wondering what you do with the chippings?
Does the customer usually keep them or do you take them to sell ?

Most people keep them. I've seen them used for walking paths in the woods, errosion control for paths or lawn seeding, landscaping mulch, or just leave it and let it rot. Some want it just blown all over (no piles). I don't recomend it for landscape mulch, most of the stuff is 90 to 95 percent hardwood (maple, birch, cherry, and crap wood). I'm not sure who I would sell to? I've heard it can be used for livestock beding but would seem more uncomfortable than saw dust.

This customer I don't think realized how much chips there would be. Having said that, he doubled his brush piles from when I scoped out the job 3 weeks ago!

Rowski,
I too do a little of this on the side with a Woodchuck WC17 with a 12" capacity. The problem that I try to tell my customers is that PLEASE don't pile the brush more than 3' high and if they can, to align the but ends in one direction.

This greatly saves the time and energy needed to pull those sticks out of the pile. I hate having to fire up the chainsaw to cut into a pile of brush. Sometimes, I'll unhook the tractor from the chipper and separate the pile with my FEL(more time).
If a pile is laid out right I can feed the chipper as fast as it can take it, but if not then I spend more time pulling the mess to the chipper feeder.

I prefer green brush to old dried up stuff too. Those dried up sticks have a habbit of snaping off at the wrong time and when they do..look out... Plus the knives on the chipper seem to like green over dried, the chips look better and rot faster.

It's a Valby CH160 hydraulic feed. Hasn't let me down yet.

The first chipping job I got the guy piled it about 6 feet high in a burn pile form. What a headache that was. He didn't know I had a chipper before he finished piling. I tell people I like small piles with the butt ends all one direction. If not it will take me most like double the time. Not that it takes that much longer but it sure is more tiring. Dry wood is dangerous! I had a larger (4")and long stick vibrate and twist as it was self feeding, which is normal. I reached down about 4 feet way from the chipper feed chute when I got cracked in the head by a broken end of the dry wood. Good thing I wear my saw helmet with hearing protection and face shield. I've gotten slapped may times in the face by small (1/2") branches as they self feed. My favorite wood to chip is Poplar. I fell it and with two guys you can load it into the feed, the whole tree in and gone, no limbing.
