If you don't mind me asking, how much $ was the 160? Looks to be the best bang for the buck of their line...

It's really hard to say what it actually cost me. They lumped the together the tractor, loader, backhoe, cab, and chipper. But I think they go for around $4k with hydraulic feed.

Here's a web page with Valby CH 160, hydraulic feed chipper Sawmill City lists the hydraulic unit for $6800. That's a lot of rentals to break even!

Hmmm.....
Must be they forgot to add $$ for the hydraulic feed when they sold me the tractor package. $6K is pretty steep and your right, one could rent a unit many, many times before you break even and you don't have any maintance. I just had my knives ground at a machine shop, $75 ouch. Was my own faulty, waited to long before having it done. The machince shop said if I bring them in sooner it would cost a lot less.

Are the knives something you can re build with welding rod and grind yourself? I just did that with the cutting edge for my post hole digger and used an 80000 tensile rod and it seems to be holding the edge a lot better than the original. Not quite hardfacing rod which is 100,000 but better than mild steel. I've seen chipper knives and it seems like the same principal would apply.

A chipper is right up there with the tiller on the short list of implements I want but don't yet have. Unfortunately, at Empire Farm Days the Wife saw the price tags and nearly flipped! She insists that burn piles are much cheaper...then orders chips by the truckload. Sure would like to make those chips for her!

It's going pretty well, busy, busy, busy! Between work, moonlighting, the 10 month old Nik, my dog it is a hand full. But that's the way I like it.
