Chipper/Shredder or Burn?

I slit some heater hose and put around the top edges on my TroyBilt shredder. I kept getting arms bruised from being brought into contact with the lip of the chute when the machine grabbed and pulled things into it.

Look under the Customization area and look up "craddle" there to see what various folks have done to affix regular shredders to their 3 ph. That works, but if you're buying fresh the best bet would be one that fits on the 3 ph and runs off the PTO. You can get a MacKissic at the local JD dealers for about $1699. Think DR ones are about this same price. Jinma prices may be a couple hundred cheaper. You want one that is reasonably easy to remove the hammers and chipper blade on. I've rebuilt my TroyBilt hammers/chipper 2 to 3 times now. It's a job but not insurmountable.

I do brush piles of big stuff and chip up small stuff. Leave even the small stuff down below until I can get my TroyBilt attached to the 3 ph or get a genuine 3 ph model. Even then, I'll leave the big stuff. Can't see paying for a humongous chipper to chip up the big stuff. Used to use the big stuff for fire wood.

I got a price on a Woods 5000 model 3pt hitch chipper/shredder this morning......List $3495, dealer will sell it for $2600. I was pretty surprised at the price. Once all the heavy chipping work is done I doubt I'll need a machine like that again.

He also had a Simplicity 8hp B&S chipper/shredder for $800, the chipper and shredder chutes were made from cheap looking thin plastic. I know it's only $800 but come on. A Trobilt 10hp B&S chipper/shredder, at another dealer, was only $750 and at least both chutes were made of steel and you tow it with a tractor. The Troybilt looked like a brute compared to the Simplicity.

This will have to wait until after I get a tiller anyway, I need/want that more than a chipper/shredder now.

Just got back from a business trip, so I was out of touch for a bit. I know I've not done enough real price shopping yet, mainly because I don't like to bargain that hard if I'm not sure I'm going to buy.

John Mc, I'm a long way from a pristine clean woods - I'm mostly looking at reclaiming field edges, and some areas around my house that used to be more open. The rest is opening some trails through the woods, and that's where I run into the problem with logging refuse.

Most of my land is wooded, and I intend to let it go wild as much as I can. Too bad that since they cut out all the big stuff, too much light gets down to the floor, and now it's all rasberrys and roses, which is quite a pain!

Thanks for the input guys!

I took on a chipping job today with my Jinma. It actually made me a few bucks. We chipped everything small enough to fit that came off a 24" maple that a storm blown down. Two hours had a large dump bed trailer half full of chips. It didn't make a mistake. I think I am going to beef up the three point attachment arms. They have bent slightly. A 90 degree angle welded across the top should stiffen it up. So far I am proud of my purchase.

I have a situation similar to yours only it was logged about 12 years ago. I bought a Jinma ($1600) and have about 20 hours on
it. Works great, the feed easily pulls in branches from 1/2" to 6". It can do a truckload of branches in about an hour. Here in Oregon they give a 30% state tax credit for chippers (environment). Much easier than burning and the chips are nice for trails, etc. Don't use it for vines or blackberries though, they are a pain to feed and all the little chips start growing.
