Chipper chipping pine - sticky sap increases clogging frequency

I agree with mixing pine with other wood to resist clogging, if you have other wood to chip. Myself I like chipping evergreens because its less taxing on the chipper and I burn most everything in my woodstove down to about 1-1/2". You also can not beat the smell of fresh cut and chipped pine.

I thin my young pine stands and chip 800 to 1200 trees - almost every year. My first chipper was a Wallenstein BX42S. The pine sap would cause the chute to plug. A diesel fuel wipe down was a temporary solution. Permanent solution was - pile the pines and chip the following year. Not a single problem when I followed this procedure. So..... every spring I was chipping last years pines.

Then I purchased a larger tractor( 2009 Kubota M6040 ) and a larger chipper( Wally BX62S ). The larger diameter chute and higher air flow allows me to chip them immediately after felling.

10 year old thread...

But I try to mix up fresh pine with other material which seems to keep the sticky stuff down.

WHAT!! After ten years pine pitch is no longer sticky. I think not. Good info is good info - regardless of age.
