Chisel Plow for a 2955 John Deere?

You should be able to pull 7-9 shanks depending on soil type, etc.
A couple of examples from eBay:

Sort of the same rule that applies to offset discs........10hp to the foot give or take.

my 50 hp john deere pulls a 9 shank like a knife through butter, but in "new ground" which is TOUGH. I hardly ever have to engage front wheel assist, and only when it is so muddy i should park the tractor anyway. if I were you, get a 11 or 13 shank, you can always remove shanks!!!

Big difference in some chisel plows. Big difference in what some people do, or expect from a chisel plow.
2955 was sort of a "mid-framed" tractor from Deere's line. I had a 4250. Just one generation earlier, it was a bit larger and heavier, plus 30 more hp, and with weights and fluid in tires, probably 4000 lbs heavier, PLUS MFWD. I used a 9 shank DMI chisel plow that would just about stop the 4250 in its shadow when dropped below 10" deep. We have lots of clay here.

My experience had been similar with the heavier, larger framed chisels. We've pulled an 11 shank (12' wide) with a 120hp tractor and it was a load at times for it some the dry, hard soils we have. Now, I have a little light-duty 7 shank with spring trips that I use with my 8n, but it's an entirely different type of implement weighing less and requiring less hp per shank to use.
So, I still wouldn't go over 9 shanks for your 2955 if you are going to use it as any real primary/deep tillage at any reasonable speed. If it handles it fine then you can simple move a little faster.
