Oil & Fuel Chnage oil, leave filter unchanged

I'm thinking that a smart guy like you knew the answer before you asked the question.

Get the filter Bob. :)

Oil change = Filter change. One without the other is penny wise and pound foolish.

I'm kind of surprised no one mentioned this because I know you all know it...

The speed in which the oil gets dirty and needs a changin, is also greatly affected by the conditions your working in. (i.e. dusty or not). If your working in very dusty conditions you'll likely need to change oil more often than recommended by a manual.

I check oil every time I go to use my tractor and when it starts to use oil is when I change oil. The magic # has been 75 hours usually (this has been true for both my diesels with different engine maker). I also do not like to go above 100 hours regardless.

Keeping the air filter clean is the key to keeping the oil clean as someone already kinda mentioned.

300 hours (though it seems a lot) may not be too much depending on the quality of air filtration system on the tractor and the conditions your working in.

I try never to change oil without filter. If you do... .at least take of the filter and dump out as much of the old oil as you can. IMHO.

Doc,

I thought of another way to put it.

by not changing the filter it would be like:

Changing the babies poopy diaper without wiping his/her butt.

It is just wrong, changethe filter.

Actually it would be more like wiping the baby's butt and then putting the poopy diaper back on. The poop is like the oil and the diaper is the filter. Excellent analogy though.

Change the filter (diaper)!!!

I ALWAYS change the filter when I change my oil, in anything that has a filter.

BUT I get the impression from this thread that many feel that if one would NOT change the filter whe he changes his oil, that somehow the new oil causes whatever the filter holds, to go back into suspension in the new oil, and therefore end up back in the engine.

Would this be the case? Somehow I doubt it, but have nothing but limited common sense to rely on...

Seems to me the risk of not changing one's oil filter would be that it would clog up and go into bypass mode, if bypass mode exists in a given application, or worse clog up and starve the engine of oil...bye, bye bearings, etc.

Sooooooo...if one would elect NOT to change his oil filter each time he changes his oil (I know one guy that told me he changes his oil EVERY 12 OPERATING HOURS on one of his tractors) how much harm might we expect, provided that the oil filter is not clogging up too bad?

Just thinking out loud as like I said, I do change my filters when I change my oils...:)

But if someone told me he did not change his oil filter more frequently than recommended by the manufacturer, but did change his oil at a greater frequency, I am not sure I could fault him too much...heck, worst thing he could do is change back to NOT changing his oil as much as he does, and to start following the manufacturer's oil change recommendations...

Glowplug, I would have to change my statement and agree with you.

My two cents,

I always change filter along with an oil change for all the reasons commented previously. One thing no one mentioned is as the filter gets loaded up by trapping dirt will increase the efficiency of the filter in allowing less particle to go through. The thing happens at the loaded filter stage is reduction of fluid flow to the point flow could be low enough causing inadequate lubrication. Changing oil and filter is the cheapest insurance that one can do preemptively.

As the son of an aircraft mechanic in times of war, they would bring a bird in for an oil change. Change the filter, and add a quart of oil to offset the oil in the filter.
As a student of Auto Mechanic's in the local Jr College, during one of the lab classes my instructor showed us a study where oil actually got better with use. However, this improvement is offset by the dirt carried in the oil.
Therefore, changing the filter more frequently will help keep the same oil cleaner which saves oil
