I am not anything close to an expert on balers. That said I bought a NH 316 this past summer.

I put new twine cutters on, tightened up all the chains, changed gear oil in both boxes and greased everything. It worked fine with no problems all summer. So far it was a good buy for me.

From everything that I have read and all the people I spoke to, the NH316 is an extremely reliable machine. I would have considered one for sure but the only ones I came across had been living outside for many years.

The NH 570 or the 575 would be a good direction VERY well built. The big difference is the feeder system. I run 2 nh 575's and make a lot of bales they preform great.

after a bit of research I really wanted a 575 but they were $10k plus and I wanted to hedge a bit and get something older

The one I bought looks liked it spent a long time outside. Now it has a dry sunless home.:)

I put up small square bales as part of a small family owned dairy until I was into my 30's. When it came to square balers nothing performed like John Deere green. We usually put up between 7,000 and 9,000 per year and for years we had a JD 327 that was nothing but reliable. We bought this unit new in 1983 and used it w/o issue until 2001 when I finally sold out. The only time it would miss tying a bale was when you were in transition between balls of twine on occasion. I always felt that JD equipment was overpriced but in the case of square balers it seemed to me to be rightfully so.
