BX2200
I always wanted to put Christmas lights on my BX2200, but have not been able to find 12v Christmas lights. The answer appeared to me today at a trip to Target. Right in the clearance was a Coleman 350 Watt Power Inverter (PMP350). The best part was the price, only $15! It came with color coded clamps for connection directly to your battery, or a set to use for the lighter in your car. It has a 700 watt peak load with a 350 watt continuous load. I think it should be enough for a string of Christmas lights. I'll work on it tomorrow and post some pictures if it works out.

Should work fine. I have the 500w version. I also have an older triplite 150w version that I used to run a 100 light string on my 'hayride'. The triplite units are a tad 'conservatively' rated.. but still.. I shouldn't have been near it's rated load anyway.

I've seen some garden tractors with inverters installed.. etc.

Having 110v available is super nice. I used my invertor out in my pasture away from utilities to do things like drill holes in fence posts for gate hinges.. etc...

Thanks Soundguy. I thought of using the converter year round. Mounting it somewhere on the tractor, not to sure where would be the best spot.

High, dry, and as protected as you can get. Possibly even plastic plug protectors, and good wireing/ power switch / fuse or CB for it. ( try a power windo CB )

Buying an inverter is certainly an option. However, if you are reasonably handy it is very easy to convert a standard strand of mini-lights to run on 12v.

First, I would recommend checking out http://people.howstuffworks.com/christmas-lights2.htm . They give a pretty good overview of how mini lights work.

So, to convert a set to run on 12v instead of 120v (bulbs don't care if it is ac or dc), all you have to do is shorten each series from 50 bulbs per sequence to 5 bulbs per sequence. The easy way to do this would be to buy yourself a string of 50 minilights and a length of zip-cord. Cut your string of mini-lights into 5 bulb length. Lay them on top of the zip cord end to end. Now comes the trick part. You need to either strip the insulation or cut ONE of the two wires at every junction. Splitting a zip cord and stripping the insulation without damaging the wire is tricky but can be done. Splitting a zip cord and cutting one of the two wires then stripping the ends off both sides is easier. Connect one end of both segments to the exposed wire(s). The magic, and potentially tricky part, is you MUST alternate wires at the end of each segment.

Using crummy line art, what you will have is

[pre]

+ ---v-----------v----------
|.....| |.....| |.....|
- ----------^-----------^---
[/pre]

Which, if this comes out, shows you have 5 bulbs (in the middle) from + to -, then 5 bulbs from - to +.

Anyway, you should get the idea. It is a bit of wiring but it saves you from having to an inefficient inverter and potentially lethal voltages.

Of course, you could just buy a string of 12 volt rope light from http://www.christmaslightsetc.com/categorydetail.asp?CategoryID=131 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also - for anything 12V - Christmas lights, heaters, fans, even a 12V blender for your Margaritas - check with any large boat store. West Marine or Boater's World have on-line stores if you're not close to the water.
