They didn't pay off anything, they still owe billion of dollars, at that rate it will be 40 years before its, "paid off".

That's not a payoff. That's a refi with another lender.
Amazing how many people don't get this, it really doesn't matter HOW it was paid off. The point is, Chrysler no longer owes money to the US Government. Their debt to the US taxpayers was paid with interest.That's not a payoff. That's a refi with another lender.

If someone has $8k in credit card debit at 20% interest and refinances their house at 5% to pay it off, they PAID OFF the debt to the credit card company. It doesn't matter where the money came from.
