Cicadas Cicadas Cicadas! From the Epicenter!

We don't have any here yet. But, when we do, I'm gonna take some sewing thread and tie it around their head just behind the eyes and show my grandson how to fly a tethered cicada. We used to do that as kids and it was hours of fun. Here's a video from YouTube, but the string this guy uses is too heavy for a good flight.

Ya'll sure do live an exciting life down there in Texas!:laughing::laughing:

I am a bit disappointed though. I figured Texas Cicada's would be so big that you could rope 'em and have them fly you around the yard. :p:shocked::D:D:D

Funny, I don't remember Cicada's as a kid...

Dan

Nah! You have cicadas confused with mosquitoes. It's skeeters we rope in our rodeos.

Dan, a youngster like you might not remember that we didn't have store-bought toys much as kids. Flyin' cicadas was the closest thing to RC airplanes we ever had. I was a teenager when I saw my first gasoline powered model airplane flying on the end of tethered line going 'round-n-'round, up-n-down, and making loops. I was mesmerized.:D

For us it was June bugs on a thread. I haven't thought of that in 20 years nice my kids did it. Good memories.

Gas powered! We only had balsa wood and rubber band planes! :p:D:D:D

When I was living in LA, a guy in the subdivision was building and flying RC copters. Those things were works of ark. He would fly them with "training bars" that hopefully would keep him from destroying the copter. I would have been afraid to fly them honestly. They were just too pretty. A club would fly planes out of a nearby school parking lot. I would hear them flying and ride over to watch. They had some very well done planes. One young guy came out with his wife and new plane to fly one day. He got it up in the air, something happened and the plane literally nose dived into the ground 3-4 inches. He had all of my sympathy as I watched that grown man cry in front of the other fliers and his wife. He had built a beautify plane, flew it for maybe a minute before it was in pieces.

June bugs I remember but we did not lasso them.:laughing::laughing:

I remember tying string to many a June bugs legs. Almost as much fun as chasing my little sister around threatening to put the June bug in her hair:D

Never flew June bugs or cicadas. But we sure had fun with horse flys! Shove a piece of hay in their keister and watch the hay fly!

The doggone things are EVERYWHERE! I was moving the auger for the PHD a few minutes ago and the thing started buzzing! I bumped the open end on the ground and six of the things came out on the ground.
