City boy shopping for first tractor

The prices you posted were probably OK but think about shipping and hauling and if you have to finance them the interest rate will add up.

I would still look at New also with the 0% it is hard to beat Warranty and service from a local good dealer.

I have not tried to talk you out of HST but in used market I would be real careful they are complicated machines inside.
Also remember that if you want 45 usable HP in a HST you prob need to buy 50 or so to make up fro the losses.

By the way we told you up front we all had our Opinions and we love to spend others money.

Gears on tractors are stepping back into the dark ages just like gears on cars is.

Yep, thats why all true sports cars are geared and Ag tractors are geared. If there wasn't plus and minuses to both, they wouldn't sell both.

Same as me. :D

Everyone I've talked to that has owned both has advised me to go with HST.:p

Now, about that HP....

LOL!!! Maybe I'm just better with a clutch then you are!

Roy, that may be. (Wouldn't take much of an expert, either!) Still, I'd bet a cold pop that I can move more dirt in 8 hours with my L3410 HST than you can with your 790 --> even after adjusting for the difference in bucket sizes.

Bring your's up and well have a go! There's a big old pile that needs moving...

If you two are going to go at it, then meet in the middle, and do somebody else a favor. No sense one of you benefitting from the other's hardship.
As far as Geedub is concerned, and the work he is contemplating, I would suggest a tractor with 2 pairs of remotes on the rear. It seems the thing to do, if possible.
If a fwa tractor is available, that also might be useful. The extra work it will do when boxblading, pulling heavy items, etc will probably make up for the added cost. That Georgia clay gets mighty slick.
I went from a 11hp pto to 65hp pto and then 85hp. I can't think of a thing the the 65 would do that the 11 wouldn't do, but time and the correct attachment were critical when trying to get a small tractor to do a big tractor's job. There are things the small one wouldn't do, such as pick up heavy items with my boom pole, but there are places the little one would go that the big one wouldn't think about. My reason for buying the big one, was I was tired of getting the JD stuck, and wanted to go back to fwa for the added traction. When I purchased the 85 hp, it was sitting among some really big tractors and actually looked small. That ended when I went to load it on an 8'6" wide trailer and it overhung the edge by almost 3 feet. It really is too big for me, but I haven't gotten it stuck, and it pulls the JD2555 out easily when I get it stuck.

HA Ma Bell we don't use use your hand cranked wall phone any more.

LB, some of us prefer a gear machine...both in trucks and tractors. That post was a bit uncalled for, don't you think?

No problem...I'll be starting out tomorrow and should be there sometime in late November. Might be that contest will be moving snow rather then dirt.
And, let's trade that cold pop for a bottle of scotch (Cutty Sark will do it)

NO problem! After all, getting 8 hours of work out of you for a bottle of Cutty is still a good deal (for me!). ;-)
