Actually I try to take the keys out of my equipment when it's not being used and especially if I am not around. Not so concerned about actual theft but joy riding. ..."Hey, wouldn't it be funny if we can run this backhoe through the barn or into the neighbours pool" ...you get my drift.
Actually what first caught my attention t was your picture of an exactly-like-mine 430. Maybe not exactly like mine; the sheet metal on yours is less dinged up and a lot less rusty. Good tractor though and easy to work on. The main issue around here is that it's getting hard to get parts for them.
I'm afraid some idiot will joy ride mine, have an accident and sue me.

I only had a few vehicles with a column mounted 3 speed shifter and I quickly converted those to floor shifters.
Then you could watch the column stub move as you shifted...lol

favorite trans for drag racers is the old venerable Powerglide, highly modified of course. Way back when I had an Impala SS 409 with a Powerglide in it. You never could feel it shift. Good drive in car. Had a backseat like a couch.... (y)

They even used powerglide trannys in rolls royces at one point. Modified of course to be smoother...

What?? It was always "3 on the tree" never saw or driven a 4 speed on the column
Old Toyota Scout had 4 on the tree.

Remember the early '60's Chevy ignition switches?
As long as you didn't pull the key in the Lock position, you could still grab the switch and move it to start and back to run.
No key needed then.
Would sure like to have that again.

Fun thread!

Or the really old switch on the floor board for the starter? Had an old Ford at a place I used to work at had a truck like that. Total anti theft.

Model A ignition comprised of armoured cable that grounded the ignition system when off... really very effective and 1920's technology.

Still had to ****** spark, set throttle, adjust fuel mixture, pull choke and then step on starter to start and if you forgot to turn on fuel you might get to the end of the block before running out of gas...

And the '50's GM trucks that had the foot starter to the right of the gas pedal!
No starter solenoid to fail,as the spring pushed it out.
And the hand choke and throttle.
Talk about anti-theft in today's terms!

My father's KB5 which he sold about 15 years ago had that. Also, split windshield and the vent in the cowl which cranked up so that you could bring fresh air in. That truck would set in the barn cellar for months; but when he wanted to use it he'd jump in, get it rolling backward and when he dumped the clutch it would start immediately.
