Don't you just hate it when some idgitt from the big city comes into town and plops down on some land, stupid as can be, and expects to be able to make a farm out of it?

Yeah, well, this time I'm the idgitt. Maybe not a complete idgitt, I spent a few summers in my youth on the farms of relatives, learned to love the life, and now a life long dream has come true.

My first question is going to be about tractors and implements but I'll post that in a more appropriate place.

I wasn't thinking. But it made the Mrs. happy, made me happy...at least so far...of course my first farmer crisis hasn't happened yet.

A good place to start your education is to check out the local universities such as the University of Florida and the Florida Department of Agriculture to find if they have any programs and services for landowners tailored to your interests. Around here, there is a wealth of information and services available for the asking.

Done. UF is only a half hour away, has a great website, more pubs than I'll ever be able to read, offers lots of inexpensive classes and resources. Next month they are having a small farms 3 day conference. Lots of sessions geared towards people in my situation as well as experienced farmers looking for a new niche.

Because of your new line of work, from now on your eye will always be on the weather. Let me be the first to warn you: The weather will be a constant source of frustration. It will be out to get you, personally. It will rain in record amounts when you least need it to. It will never rain when you most want it to. There will be a record freeze when your crops are the most tender. There will be record heat when your crops need it to be cool. Your moods will depend on the weather and that's too bad because it means you will always be in a bad mood. Weather is the tool of the Devil and he senses what your weather needs are and does everything he can to screw you up. You'll be cussing and swearing at the cute TV weather babe because you've come to realize she has some sort of pact with the Devil to screw you and your crops over.

Understood. My nephew just got married over Memorial weekend. Fortunately they had a place to move it indoors when they realized that day was going to be a scorcher.

And I've only been on my new property a few times so far, to clear brush, walk the perimeter, measure for a home site and power lines. During a drought that has gone on for months, it managed to rain on my puny efforts 3 times.

When you start buying tractors, remember never to line them up in a row, it is too easy for the wife to count them that way.
