I have a CK20S 4WD and it appears the 4WD is not engaging. The tractor has 129 hours on it and I put the last 29 on it myself (2nd owner). I ve used it enough to know that with $WD drive engaged you can tell a significant difference. Now it sits and spins with any weight in the bucket. The lever appears to shift easy enough. Any thoughts?

thanks
John

I would try jacking up the front off the ground and make sure if it is going in or not. Might be a pin broken in the shifter. I would think if you broke the shaft or a gear you would have heard or felt it.

Hopefully it is the same problem I had with mine which is a very simple fix.
The 4wd engagement is a very simple collar system that is external trans casing - the 4wd lever simply slides the collar so that it engages the shaft that runs forward to the front axle. In my case the pin that holds the shaft onto the shaft coming out of the front diff had some how come out which then caused that connection to no longer be properly engaged. I got a new pin and after a bit of swearing got it in. problem fixed. I'm going by memory but I think there's one shield you'll have to remove to see all this. then its easy to see if this is the problem.

Thanks I see a roll pin where the collar attaches to the shaft going into the front transfer case and I can see the shaft turning slightly. I can feel some pressure on the lever when it goes down to 4WD and back up and the linkage is working up the point of entry into the transfer case (although there is only about a ½” of movement). With the front wheels up I can freely rotate the front wheels whether it is in 4WD or not and whether engine is running or not. I hear a slight ticking as they spin but I would think that might be normal. This tractor only has 129hrs on it and I put 29 of those on since May 1st of this year. It has been sitting in the originals owners carport for 5 or so years and I don’t believe he even put a shovel full of dirt in the bucket.

I appreciate your help.
Thanks
John

Sorry, meant to get you pictures earlier but got busy... So directly in the middle leading to the front axle is the shaft that drives the front axle and it is covered by a shield, it's held in place by a bolt at each end. undo those bolts and move the shield out of the way and you'll see that the actual connection that the 4wd lever controls is under there. it moves a sleeve over the shaft out of the transmission to also go over the shaft going to the front axle. Once that sleeve is over both then the front wheels are driven.

The problem I had and you might possibly have is at the front of said shaft by the front axle there's another connection, this connection is held in place with a ring pin. With mine it some how came out and that then caused the axle to no longer be driven by the shaft.

So that's why you have to pull that cover off. If all that is good (and you can test it like you did before by raising the front end and trying to spin the wheels.) then your problem is in the front axle. (unfortunately!)

If you need more info assuming you haven't already fixed it let me know.

Thanks for the help guys. It turned out to be a cracked "cover, front differential case" item 3 in the image. It cost me $368 to get it fixed and I'm not sure what caused it or what could have caused it.

Well sorry to hear that, certainly more expensive a fix vs my missing ring pin. Did you notice if it was leaking oil from the cracked diff case? Did they show you the casing? was it a flaw in the casting? Can't say I've heard of anyone having a similar issue.
