Barely a year old, 110 hours. I did the 50 hour maintenance by the book. It starts quickly as is should but coughs and smokes a lot for around 10-20 seconds. It puts out a huge amount of smoke and it's been getting progressively worse. Doesnt matter if its cold or mild out. Seems to operate as normal after it warms up a bit.

Should I be concerned? What should I do to clear this up? It stinks my shop up unbearably every time I start it up

No. There was no change at all after the 50 hour service. This issue started in the past month or so

Have you tried double cycling the glow plugs?

No I havent. Does that mean turning the key till the glow plug light goes off, then repeating before starting?

Sounds like an injector issue.
I would call for service tech to take a look at it.

Would using regular diesel fuel and not the red dye off road fuel have anything to do with it?

Mine smokes pretty good for 10 seconds or so after a cold start. Has always done so.. Just a puff of smoke when it's warm out..

No. Dye makes no difference. Same fuel one is just charged tax while the other is not. I used dyed (off road) diesel 90 percent of the time. No issues.

Its not black. I'd say its between white and grey.

Double cycling the glow plug does help. The first second or two after starting is perfect, but after that it does cough and smoke... but not as bad.

Mine runs rough if the ambient temps are below 40f.

On yours there is an intake air heater grid that is easily diagnosed. The circuit is controlled by a relay that looks at coolant temperature. If the coolant is below a certain temp the electric grid for the air pre-heater runs for about 30 seconds, you can generally hear the idle speed come up a bit when that circuit for the heater shuts down as the pre-heater uses many amps to heat the intake air.

Check the amp draw at the wire for the grid when first running the engine. Big red wire by the 4 bolt flange on the intake manifold. I'm not sure how many mine draws I can check. Make sure the wire isn't melted by the connector at the pre-heater.

Regards, Fred
