I was thinking of suggesting trying a 12 point around the size you suspect, but I thought that might sound silly.
A 12 point socket or a 12 spline ("Universal") may fit, in that is it slips over the square post and resists turning by hand. In my experience the leverage of the (ratchet, breaker bar, sliding "T" bar) handle is often enough to bugger the corners of a stubborn plug. Although crescent wrenches are often frowned upon, such an adjustable wrench with pressure on the thumbwheel to hold it tight is often the "right" tool. A dab of never seize on re-insertion will reduce subsequent stubbornness.
