How many hours on this engine? When is the last time you did a leak-down or compression test? White/light grey smoke that lingers in the air is unburned fuel. To satisfy yourself, you can pop the valve cover and check the timing. Spill time it to check it closer. And FWIW, ALL diesel engines require a lift pump of some type.

I'm not sure of the hours, it's been running good, just all of the sudden left him him dead in the water..

Can anyone tell me from experience how this pump mounts? It sits right side up and has its own little gearbox it runs off of, I've read it needs to be timed ad then I've read it's got a key and a master groove on the gear and its dummy proof..

Have you bleed the air @ the injection pump. It has an upper and lower bleed screws on the pump itself. They stick out of the side of the pump horizontally. Think a 5/16 wrench fits em. My old combine with same engine would never crank @ the first of the season without bleeding air out here also.
