Clean Diesel Engine or existing Diesel Engine?

If you've found a diesel that you like, you're better off to buy it now before they stick on more stuff to maintain. For me, there's not a thing out there that I want because I'm still waiting for them to put a diesel in a small pickup and in stick shift. Been waiting many years for a stick shift Mercedes diesel to replace our 1983. It's still running fine but stuff like the fresh air inlet are broken and not worth fixing. Clock quits running at night in the winter time, and it doesn't seem to have quite as much power (all 65 hp) as it once had. Otherwise, it looks and runs almost like new.

Two things to keep in mind here....

#1- the Ford Powerstroke for '07 is still an '06 built engine. This means that you can run either fuel in your '07 Ford.. When the 6.4L comes out in January(presumably as an '08) you will need to run the ULSD.
I was not aware that Ford had a Powerstroke in '06. I thought they had a 6.0 liter.

What are the new changes supposed to do to overall fuel economy? I've got an old '94 2WD Cummins Dodge that's an absolute fuel miser....mileage in the mid 20s (18mpg pulling 7000# on I-90). Folks I've talked to with late model 24 valve Dodges claim mileage in the low to mid teens.....but "Oh, lotsa power!".

I'm looking for adequate power and great fuel mileage in a diesel and the old '94 delivers both. Do the new changes represent a return to sanity or do they make mileage worse?

I've never owned a diesel on-road vehicle, but with gas at $1.12.4/litre (US $3.70 per US gal) and diesel at US$3.26/gal, and the greater volumeric efficiency of diesels, I want one! I wish the Big Three would put a medium size diesel in their full size SUV's. I love my 2001 Expedition 5.4, but don't love the 11mpg (US) winter city-consumption. Now a nice diesel with ~ 350 ft lbs of torque.... I don't need the monster torque of the 6.0 Powerstroke, not in a half-ton chassis. And why did GM with their gorgeous new full size Yukon/Suburbans series not put a diesel option? Uncertainty over the new low sulpher diesel regs is what I've read. I look at Europe with all the small, medium, and large engine diesel options, and wish we had them here. Hopefully soon.

More US made diesel engines, more North American grown biodiesel, less middle eastern oil. Sounds good to me.

Just for interest sake Canada is the largest exporter of oil to the US!:D
