Cleaning Carbide Tipped Saw Blade

I used to use simple green and let the blade soak a while, then rinse with water, followed by some wd-40. I did buy some blade cleaner from Lee valley tools recently, that works well. I had read an article from Freud that had concerns with using oven cleaner, they felt it could attack the brazing they use to attach the carbide teeth. I don't think once would be an issue myself, but could see long term it being problematic.

I use oven cleaner. It works great.

Ditto on that!
Also oven cleaner is great to de grease cruddy engines/parts and even use it as a carburetor cleaner.
Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
For a saw blade a film of wax once cleaned helps as does waxing saw table.

My shelf always has a few cans of dollar store oven cleaner on hand as well as WD40 and duct tape.

I use oven cleaner also, but I've also seen pitting in the brazing that holds the carbide to the steel plate. So, don't soak it any longer than necessary and check the tooth attachment afterward.

As for the wax on the saw blade and table - if you're doing woodworking, don't use wax with silicone. It will cause fisheyes in the finish coat of varnish and is very hard to remove.

As a garage sale/ yard sale type guy I always but the good old fashioned 'canning jar' wax as that is pure unadulterated wax.
Has to be as it is 'food grade'.
I rub it on my planer, bench saw surface to prevent rust and often coated my 'good' saw blades as well.
In Canada it was generally an Esso product.

Learned these tricks from an old time woodworker.

LOL, now I'm in that 'old timer' club!
As such it is my duty to pass on those old tricks!

I also use canning wax as a finish on outdoor furniture. Applied with a propane torch or heat lamp soaks it deep into the wood. Can be renewed at any time. If it ignites occasionally with the torch I consider I have the temperature just about right.

Hi All,

How would you clean a 10" 80 tooth carbide tipped saw blade? I've been cutting a lot of willows around a pond and the blade is really gummed up. I was going to try wd40 first. I also have gasoline, brake fluid, and several other chemicals to choose from.

Kevin

What kind of saw are you using to cut willows around the pond?
