Cleaning Sludge from the Sump with??

i remember dropping a hydro pump in my 2n.. had near 2" of solidified gunk in there.

a lil diesel washed around in there and drained would have done NOTHING.

I pressure washed the pump and sump.

have a 59 ford 541 offset that had been in a flood in lousiana, a la, katrina.

trans and that funny center housing and rear had silt in t hem..

flushed them out many times while working on her.

Every sump i've pulled apart i've pressure washed if it had gunk in it.

are you afraid of water? water is VERY EASY to remove.. just have to apply some JR high school level chemistry.

no reason to sacrifice good cleaning fearing a lil h20

ps.. ont he parts washer solvent. if it is soap based. THAT i would be concerned about. it breaks down oils.. if you don't get 100% of it out.. and put the oil in on top of soap residue.. what do yuo think will happen?

No fear of water here, just saying there is really no need to introduce it. Water left in a transmission does it no good- hence one looks for milky oil like substance when inspecting any type of trans which uses oil. You may have heard of oil and water don't mix?
I can't specify what Safety Kleen uses for their mix, but I can say my shop cleaned every type of automotive part, including transmissions,, engines and rear and front ends of about every foreign car known to man, with no issues, and we NEVER used water, ever.
The MDSS for Safety Kleen could probably render more data on what's used in their proprietary formula.
You're welcome to use H2O as much as you want, and you might find others are maybe not as good at getting all of it out of the box as you- which is why I suggested keeping it out of the mix. YMMV.

you must not have read my message very well.. or at all.. or did not understand it.

I did not advocate running water in a tranny. i said to remove the water before running the tranny.

as for oil and water mixing.. sure they do.. it's called an emulsion.. add in a polar solvent.. and then you get a soloution and not a suspension.

no room for myth when you can simply use science...

I read your message several times, and there is no myth here, just an expression; not meant to be technical in nature, it's called an expression for a reason. I did not say that you were advocating leaving water in a trans, but that water could be left by one's inability to get it all out, just like what one sees when there is water MIXED with oil, hence the milky, undesirable substance, which is not a lubricant.
You use water all you want to clean transmissions, no problem here; my way is just the way those who use chemistry get the job done without introducing water into the equation.

However, on searching Safety Kleen's web site for MDSS data I found that they are now offering Aqueous solutions too, so it looks like either of our methods can be viable. See link: Aqueous Parts Washers | Cleaning Equipment | Safety-Kleen

the problem i have using a soap vs a petro solvent is this:

the saop will degrade the oil.. permanently.. period.

the petro solvent will very temporarily thin the oil.. untill it warms up and flashes off.. thent he oil will not be thinned.

the oil attacket, surfacted, and otherwise broke down by any soap left over.. won't self heal.

I prefer self healing to non self healing cleaning methods.

I've had good luck mixing one qt. oil with 3 qts. kerosene.
