Dan, any idea if simple green will work on clothes? Diesel smell has to be near impossible to wash out of clothes for us

Yep. I laughed at a mechanic friend that swore by it until he said, "Stick your hands out" and sprayed my diesel engine residue covered hands. I rubbed them together and rinsed EVERYTHING off with a hose. I shot my t-shirt with it and the pattern of the stain dissolved. The filth clung to the t-shirt but came out in the wash.

Further, I have a thing about sweat and lay on the antiperspirant/deodorant heavily which builds up on my shirts. Search the internet for how to remove this and you'll find nothing. My shirts were stiff as cardboard under the arms with white residue. I soaked them with Simple Green for a day and then scrubbed them with a mixture of borax and Simple Green then ran 'em through the washer. It took two cycles but they are free of buildup and soft throughout. I can't praise the stuff enough.

Diesel fuel is biodegradeable so just spray some liquid fertilizer on it like Miracle Grow and it degrade on it's own. Bacteria will eat it all up.

There are some microbes that eat hydro-carbons but I have no idea where a homeowner could purchase them.

They are in your soil, unless you live in a full-on desert.



Just let it be. It will be gone soon enough.

I spilled about ten gallons of diesel on my gravel parking area when my diesel nozzle fell out of the semi tank. I smooth my gravel about monthly with a chain harrow. I can't even tell where the spill was anymore just 3-4 months later. Dilution is the solution. Spread out the spill or water the crap out of it.

Simple Green is probably easier to get but I like a product called Oil Eater. Costco use to sell it (don't live near one now so I can't say if they still do. The stuff was designed to clean up oil spills without causing harm to the environment. The stuff works great. I use it to clean oil, grease, soot from the exhaust pipe, mud, and pretty much everything else. The few times I tried Simple Green it didn't seam to work as well (but tests can be subjective). Now I buy it on-line from WalMart shipped free to my front door.

I bet the simple green will do fine but Ricks recommendation was the one that I got the laugh off of. Rick, does that work with dungarees also?

Simple green is about the only thing I have found that will remove the diesel smell from clothing. I pre soak in a wash tub, then rinse good. After the pre soak in simple green and rinse I then move the item to the washing machine. Now if you want to bring the wife up to speed in a hurry, mix something with diesel on it in her laundry basket or washing machine. The smell will be transferred to the other items.

The final answer for me on clothes stains is Goo Gone and it will need a cycle of Simple Green soak to loose the Goo Gone possibly.

DON'T wash it with pure water. That just float's the petroleum to the surface waters. Foolish!

"Leave it" is the answer I will go with as the Simple Green had no noticeable impact on the stain.
