cleaning trans

Just got my tractor out of gear it was stuck . He told me I should drain the trans and fill with gas lit sit 15 min. then drain and pressure wash and refill. Is there a better method or product to use I am kind of leary of the gas thinking it might be bad for the seals. Its a ford 841

You haven't given enough details to give a good comment. I have had tractors with water in the trans/hydraulic. I prefer to drain and fill with clean fluid , repeat, until no signs of water.

Filling with GAS? I hope you mean diesel or kerosene, not gas. Shudder.

no he said gas it got stuck in grear He had to remove the cover and pry the bars unti it poped out .Its a mech, trans 1958 ford 841. I think kero is the way to go

I need to be clear here. I know nothing about your particular tractor. Gas, however, I've had direct, scary experience with when I was young and foolish. No lasting damage, fortunately, but I have a healthy respect for gas.

I would never use it for such a purpose, just too dangerous.

I would not use gas and I sure in the heck wouldn't pressure wash it unless you plan on completely disassembling it to get the water out. A little more info on what you are working on would help.

On this tractor there is a cover plate that holds the the gear shift an starter button you remove that and it exposes the trans. It has a drain plug on the bottom to change fluid with cover removed you can see all the gears and rods want to clean it out.

I'd flush with diesel.. but not gas.. but more importantly.. i'd find out why you were able to get it stuck into 2 gears.

usually means shifter nub is worn.. or shifter pattern.. or detents. etc.

assuming its a gear trans,never heard of using gas to flush trans,but thats probably not what he's saying,probably wants to soak it to clean Gunk off/out.
How about desil fuel,that might do it and would be less dangourous? wouldn't stick a pressure washer hose in it.

Maybe,fill it up with desil and let it set over night,drain.fill with cheap oil[probably ain't such a thing but],run for an hour or so,drain,and than fill with proper fluid[whatever that might be],
Don't think desil will hurt any seals,but not sure about that 100 percent,

841 has a plain jane 4 spd gear tranny.

I wouldn't 'overfill' with diesel and let set.. it's input shaft seal will likely leak anyway.

just dump in some kero or diesel, agitate.. drain. and refill... if it was a lil wet.. add transtune seafoam and that should grab most of it onthe next change.

the wet oil ain't the biggest problem here.. the being stuck in 2 gears is!

Just bought some seafoam . going to try that. Should I leave it in all summer then change out in the fall. Just put in new hyd oil before it got stuck.

seafoam can be added and left in.. it will grab water in soloution and hold it till draining.
