Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

Westonium,

Are you burning HOT fires with seasoned wood? I know the first fires we started in our new stove caused the window to get dirty. Once we figured out that the stove like the wood to be a bit smaller the glass cleaned up on its own and pretty much stays that way. It only seems to get dirty when the fire is not hot enough.

Check you manual for the stove on cleaning. Ours was specific on the cleaners and mentioned to burn hot fires.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

As others have mentioned a hot fire will keep it clean. We light our stove in October and keep it going until the spring. So there is no good time to actually clean the window.

I bank the fire at night and usually have tar on the window every morning. This burns off as I fuel the fire and bring the stove up to temperature.

Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

We use a product called "White Off" made specifically for that purpose. Removes any discoloration and even built up creosote, and leaves a shiny window behind. Best used cold. It's a pale blue cream that you rub on with a paper towel, then buff the haze with a clean towel. Very little effort, and no fumes whatsoever. We buy it from our local woodstove store, and the small $5 squeeze bottle we bought three years ago is just now running empty.

We have always used ammonia. Sure there are fumes to the guy actually using it, but not enough to smell up the house.

He mentioned a baby. Kids are pretty sensitive to ammonia fumes. Pete

Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

I know the wife uses some kind of glass cleaner for woodstoves but I can't find the jug.

Personally, I use a razor knife. (the kind that's about 2" wide that they use to remove stickers from windshields and stuff. I've never had any scratches.

Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

We use "Speedy White" Hearth and Stove Cleaner on the glass of our pellet stove, http://speedywhite.com/. The dealer gave us a bottle when we bought our stove. It works very well, just spray it on and wipe off with a damp cloth or paper towel, no need to remove the door. When the spray hits the glass, the soot and creosote on the glass just runs down with the cleaner.

Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

Just a thought . As others have pointed out You are most likely burning at too low a setting,or using wood that is not properly seasoned . If it's causing your glass to need a lot of cleaning , it's most likely building up Creosote in your chimney . This can be very dangerous ,as it can cause a stack fire . Run Your stove a bit hotter ,and be sure to use well seasoned wood . Also a yearly sweep of the chimney is a good idea . A good site to look at is

Re: cleaning wood stove \"glass\"

The glass won't self clean easily because there is a curtain of fresh air trying to keep it clean. It does okay toward the top, but there are two triangular areas toward the bottom that are pretty gummed up.

The wood is too wet. I know this, but there is nothing I can really do about it at the moment. We moved in, in July and so haven't had time to buy wood and let it season well first. I just bought our second cord of maple and oak, but because it is pretty scarce it was a bit spendy.

I will have a note to start trying to buy wood in May or So.

If I could buy a boxcar of Southern California Eucalyptus, I would. It would pay for itself I am quite sure.

That speedy white stuff works good on my wood stove, it doesn't put off fumes
