Clearing a small piece of my lot, Wood Chipper questions

Rod - I can't understand why you would want to work that hard to clean 1/2 acre that would still have rocks and stumps to contend with. Rent an excavator and clear up trees along with the stumps and dig up the rocks to use in your rock garden. The trees could be stacked and cleaned up at your convenience and the end result will be a nice open area that can be mowed and enjoyed for whatever your plans for it could be.

A chipper is just another machine that just sits around rusting away or in the road where ever you store it. If you don't want to clear it yourself hire a machine with operator who could knock out 1/2 acre in no time flat. It would be money well spent. Just sayin.

It sounds like maybe Rod is aiming at a more natural woodland/shade garden type thing than a mowed lawn. A mixture of plantings and native plants maybe? If so, getting in there with heavy equipment will make the natural part difficult, you lose a lot of natural-appearing characteristics right off the bat.

I hear you. I thought about renting a Case CX330 Excavator (We have an Acct with the Case dealer). I have over 10k hours on excavators and more on grading dozers. So I would do it myself. But I don't want to completely clear it. There is too many rocks for a smaller machine and a large one would make a mess.

This is what I want to do

I wanted a chipper/shredder for brush - no trees. And I wanted electric just for the reduction in noise. Looked at all the big box stores and all they offer is junk. I found a Patriot that is normally just under $1,000 CSV-2515 Electric Wood Chipper Leaf Shredder 1.5 hp | Patriot Electric Chipper Shredder | Buy Wood Chippers Online | Patriot Products Inc.

It is not junk. I bought it on Craigslist for $200. Reason for good price was immediately apparent; the cutting blade was broken and rusted solid. New blade was only $40, but it took hours and finally had to weld onto the screws to back them out. Busted two easy-outs.

Sorry, digressing. :)

My point is that it would not be nearly enough for your needs (although it does now meet mine). And it is $1,000. So I don't think you are going to find something to purchase that is adequate for your needs at your desired price point.

I do wish you the best in your search though... deals do turn up!
