just found this site and im pumped to see a forum dedicated to land clearing, had to join.names Rory and i run a tree service in MA with my old man.im currently looking at a 43 acre and 8 acre job.both to be clear cut and grubbed, all stumps and slash removed.both for the same contractor.both sites within a mile of each other.im curious to hear how you other land clearing guys would bid this.ill fill you in on the two sites.the first is a heavily wooded 8 acre site.all mature hardwood trees, some rocks but for the most part it is flat and dry ground.the second is a little different.mainly because everything on the 43 acre site is completely dead.looks like a forest fire went through it years ago.its all mature trees, completely dead and theres heavy underbrush from the regrowth.the forest floor is littered with fallen trees.the terrain is rocky, small hills.every bit of vegetation must go.if i win the bid i plan on purchasing some iron.got my eyes on a timbco 425 not too far from where i am.so that would solve the cutting.not sure if i want to go with the traditional skidder or get a forwarder.i plan on subbing out the grinding to a local company.everythings getting ground, trees stumps brush.everything.i have several companys that will buy the rough grind coming right off the conveyor, send there trucks all day long.whats a good price per acre for everything?

sounds like there is some unknown risk here with "heavy undergrowth" "littered" with fallen trees. I would quote a daily rate based upon crew and equipment on site each day plus cost of subs, etc. If the customer wants package quote, I would try to get them to accept a flexible timeline within a range. Stick to the daily rate. There's plenty of work out there if you do it for peanuts. Good luck.

Impossible to price without seeing it. Any good logs? Where is your market? Firewood, do you wholesale? An 8 acre job is good size, 43 is huge. If your looking at used equipment you better know what to look for or bring someone who does. There are some good deals out there but a major breakdown can cost 20 or 30000.

QwikDraw,

I viewed your site and wanted to tell you what I am sure you know...your work is beautiful, the equipment is great and the views are priceless.

Wish your operation was in southeast VA!

Good day to you,

Jim

Ted,

I have been renting a Bobcat Forestry Cutter and it runs hot in cold or wet weather. I think it is lack of good maintenance, but can not say for sure.

We only have John Deere, Bobcat and Fecon forestry machines in our area. The Fecon 140L seems to be the best of the three from reading only.

Can you recommend a skid steer forestry mulcher machine and why?

Thanks,

Jim

I just got an email from FAE stating that they are running a special on the Wood Devil 125 for $99,000.
Here is the ad: http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=psculgdab&v=001RSBzIEyymugN872BRIWiZ7xqj1BBzW8g2VHM92heOyIsf8xQkrx3goQHCR0Z8WltvPNgh5prh4YkpMC2TnCUcUXFZpvi3k32VI7_z9OZwYLNe7vtY6TSNuloNWpXT6GUXIuEp2kq1wdpfzR2GASjsvxNVJCNKO1isaofKUk0LHQ%3D
You might want to check it out. It would be more productive than a skid steer and about the same price. Just an idea.

North central Connecticut. have worked in Cheshire, MA, Weymouth, MA, Plymouth, CT and Mystic, CT in the past 6-7 weeks...I go where the work is.

Sfloggie, Thanks for the kind words, nice to hear. As for what to buy..hard to say. Do a search on here for specific brands. Thay all have issues in the mulching environment. A dedicated machine is best but pricey and may not be needed. I have run an ASV and now have a Takeuchi. The takeuchi is a tough machine but lacks production. The ASV decent production but did not hold up in the Northeast. As said on here often, the best dealer might be the number one reason to choose a machine.

More up to date photos here.
