Clearing land, stupid or crazy?

Andy I've buried big piles of refuse like that with no negative results. Might be laws against that now, I dunno.

Yup. In NYS it's absolutely against the law, one of the many reasons I'm moving to Tennessee next summer. The environmentalists own our legislature.

My burn barrel still gets a fair amount of use though, I just keep a marshmallow on a stick by it.....

The trick Andy is to remember where you buried the bodies and then don't dig there.

I was betting you could use a laugh.

Dang, Tollster; that picture really makes me want to go out to my place, do some chores and have a campfire. I agree with you, I don't consider that type of activity work.

Andy I checked your profile to get an idea on the land you own, such as where you lived which would give many here a very good idea, and also wanted to see how old you where, which would give us an idea on your physical condition, but you don't have any info.
I am 47, clearing 13 acres of northeast mountian land, cutting and burning all softwoods, and saving the hardwood, also removing rocks and such. Its good excersise and may add years to your life, there is also no where else I would rather be or doing...

‎18 Degrees, Coyotes Howling in the distance, no one around for miles, and an all day fire, no where else I would rather be on a nice winter day.

All I can say is give it shot and see how ya make out doing it yourself, the tools you purchase you will more than likely need to maintain your new spread...take it form there. Now is a good time if there is no snow, no ticks in many parts, buring in normally not an issue this time of year, and the scrub brush does no have leaves and critters, making it easier to carry as allthe moisture is in the root ball and they are domant, not to mention there is not much a s s time, cause once ya sit down, ya get cold, its time to go back to work then....summer is another story in my book for land clearing . just pack a lunch and make it a day, you'll be surprised at your progress.

We are reclaiming some land that once was a yard with some huge locust trees. It is on a hill yet with the floods we have had there are places where just driving across the ground makes the tires spin.

When the tree trimmers left today I had about 1.5 hours of light left so I when down on the JD 310B backhoe. While I had some traction problems I was able to push over the 19"+ through locust trees because the ground was so wet. I am going to have to do some digging to get a large box elder to push over but just used the FEL up about 12'+ high to roll out the huge locust yard trees. Due to the lack of traction (2WD) I had to try pushing in different directions.

While working on wet ground is not ideal conditions but had the ground been dry I would have spent some time digging and had holes that I could not drive across without getting hung. Locust do not have massive root wads. I guess these much have been around 100 years old in that they were old 50 years ago I know.

Thanks for TBN wisdom and experience. Working on clearing 10 arces on a sandstone ridge in OK. Lots of 12-16" blackjack oaks; 100s of oak and hickory trees 3-8". very little underbrush due to density of trees.

I have pushed over many larger oaks with L3940 in first gear with 4wd using my 724 FEL, and will cut trees too big and leave stumps for later. Biggest prbolem is 3-8" trees: anybody ever tried a "brush puller", "Tree puller", or similar instrument?

I am finding with our 29 year old 13,000 pound JD 310B that clearing gound with it does take a toll on it. I think just digging holes in sandy soil is what they were designed to do best. :D
