Hey folks...any of you from Clinton County new york or surrounding area? Thinking of taking a drive up next week or so to look at some relatively inexpensive farm properties...it'll be about 5 hours for me to get up there so looking for any info on the area that I might not be able to ascertain from a few hours visit of the area...if I buy something, it'll be with the thought of moving up there FT, so things like employment in the area, schools, natural resources etc would be nice to know about...pluses and minuses of course.

Any info appreciated!

EJB,
I am just east of Washington county Ny in East Wells, Vt. I am about 10 miles in from the Ny line. Just north of Washington county in Essex county is Lake Champlain. Wahington county consists mainly of rolling farmland, very nice actually, and really beautiful farms and farm country. Just a few miles in from the Ny line driving east you start to enter into our mountains, nothing to serious, but 2000 to 2500 feet, can take your breath away hiking up them. We are pretty close to Granville, Ny. Nice little town, nice high school, and we have one good size Price Chopper for our grocerie needs. Definitely a more layed back life style than your probablly used to, but the air is clean and hard not to like! I would be happy to answer any questions you have. When you listen to the radio station, and they say your in the north country, it gives you a good feeling! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

maybe a little late, but it's not a place I would be going to look for employment. Not one of the most economically booming areas right now, except for maybe the border patrol people. Milk prices are still low. Harris labs are supposed to be locking their doors soon. The old USAF base at Plattsburgh has gotten funding voted on to build a passenger terminal and reopen as an international airport. Dates and monies not quite firm yet. Taxes are not the most enjoyable rates either.

Very scenic area, not alot of hustle and bustle unless the canadians are in shopping /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Do you have a more specific area ( town) in mind?

I have to agree that not alot of high paying jobs in the area! And the Ny taxes seem to be higher than were I am in Vt, they have the school taxes also. Im guessing about 20 to 30% higher. Good point, and I should have listed that. I always look at the taxes for a specific property. Part of the problem in upstate Ny is that those poor people get whacked with extra taxes for projects that happen down in the city. Doesnt seem right to me!

Thanks guys...figured if prices were still low, must be a reason(no jobs)...luckily in my field I can usually telecommute...as far as taxes, I am in Mass now, so can't imagine its any worse in upstate NY...could be wrong I guess. Sure can buy a lot of house/farm for your money up that way; I like vermont better, but RE prices are quite a bit more..at least those I've looked at.

Guess I'll take a peek and see for myself.

Moving from 3 acres in NH to ~100 acres in Upstate NY, my property taxes are a couple thousand dollars less /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The tough thing to arrange for telecommuting is some form of high speed internet if you're not in the village or far off the beaten path, Satellite is not an option (latency), but Verizon does still offer ISDN if you're persistent with their business office.

There are a couple of WISPS around that could work depending on where you are looking.

We recently bought a small farm in Easton , NY (Washington County) beautiful area no regrets, we love it. Our high speed internet needs are taken care of through a Direcway satellite system. FYI... There are 48 acres for sale next door.

Hi Rubs,
If your ever driving through Cambridge on Rt 22, watch your speed limit at 30, those constables are viscious. Ask me how I know /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I was goin north on Rt 22 and got nailed on the north side of the village 200 ft shy of the 55mph sign /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Doin 45 in a 30 cost me 90 bucks!!!

I'm in St. Lawrence county NY. If the property you are looking at is within the Blue line of the Adrondack Park be careful cause you are very limited to what you can build and do. Even if it is you land the are strict guide lines.
