Clippers for trimming a dog

I have two Giant Schnauzers who are around a hundred pounds. When we had one we were paying to have her trimmed. Now with two we want to start doing it ourselves.

My dad raised Cockers when I was growing up so I do have some experience but just need to find a good brand of clippers. If I remember correctly in the kennel we used oster brand clippers. That was a long time ago. What information can I get from the forum members about clippers?

I have no experience with the oster brand clippers. They do make a pretty decent blender though. I have a pair of Wahl clippers. They are extremley cheap, you can get them at walmart, they come with a bunch of accessories, various depth trimming heads, brushes , oil, etc. I have had my pair for 8 years and they are still going strong. if your looking for durability at a decent price, check out the Wahl clippers.

For what a commercial Oster animal clipper will cost you, you can buy about 10 of the inexpensive human clippers at outlet stores and places like Wallyworld.
Unless you're gonna clip dogs 8 hours a day 5 days a week, go with the human clippers, and spend the savings on dogfood.

my sister has 7 dogs (dog show stuff) and she turned me on to using a dremel to grind down the nails on my shepherd.
works much better than clipping.
give it a shot. i guarantee you will be pleased.
the dog seems to prefer it also

I would not go the extra expense of animal clippers. Get the human ones. Oster is a good brand and so is Wahl.

That is the right way to do the nail trimming especially on the big dogs. I was looking for a clipper for the hair.

I tried that but the Wahl clippers we have are too slow and the hair is too thick for it. Just bought an Andis heavy duty two speed clipper from K-V vet web site. Cost a little over a hundred dollars but if we trim three times it covers the cost.

My guess - the human clippers will not hold up. I've been using the same Oster dog trimmer for the past 15+ years, it's a real work horse. We have Newfoundlands that turn into wooly mammoths this time of year. They'll set you back ~$125.

Seems like the group is about split between cheap clippers and spending the coin on a good pair of critter clippers.

My vote says to spend the extra money on a good set of Oster clippers. I think we paid about 150.00 or so for ours. I could not see clipping our show horses (body clipping, not just face/bridle path) with the walmart version. Get a couple sets of extra blades too; even properly lubricated they will get hot to the touch and uncomfortable for whatever it is your clipping.

Everytime I try to sale money and go the inexpensive route I just end up buying a better unit later. I ordered a pro trimer from Andis that should last us many years.
