I just noticed that we have THREE (3) usernames bobs online. They are Membership #s: 16341, 16342 & 16343.

Does the software allow someone to signup multiple times with the same username? #16342 has made some posts, but the other 2 have made zero. Obviously it's the same person and all 3 usernames mirror his movements. Weird.

Attached is a cropping of the Who is Online screen.

Another example is dharris894 Member #'s: 15699 & 15700.

NOPE it is impossible. Then again the Red Sox won the world series and Bush was re-elected.

Yep, there's THREE of them. That's why it's "bobs" instead of just "bob" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also noticed it the other day, and was wondering what was going on.
The ones I keep seeing have different "user titles".

We know. I fixed those few ones.

I'm not sure the cause. I wish I did know. I'll have to dig around a bit.

I think you must be going crazy AndyM. There were only FOUR "michiglenn" when I looked /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.

It could very well be people like me who use Mozilla Firefox or another browser with tabbed browsing.

I regularly use TBN like this:

Open Main index in main page, open forums that I like in new tabs, open threads off of those forums in new tabs. If I wasn't invisible, it would very likely show a version of me at the main index, one inside a forum, and another looking at an individual discussion thread. Sometimes I have multiple forums and multiple threads open this way. I find it much easier to use and keep organized like that. That is also why I know when people respond to a thread I am highly interested in within seconds and resond quickly.

I'm also an information junkie and work in computers. My day job allows me time to keep up with TBN during the day as long as there are no network or server problems.

Does that mean that Mozilla maintains separate cookies for each instance/tab you're runnin? If I sign on with two IE sessions I can jump back and forth like you describe, yet when checking "who's on-line" there is only one instance of my name.

I'm not sure about that.. but firefox does give you lots of control over the cookies. Boiled down, IE basically has 3 modes, allow all cookies, disallow all cookies, or prompt for all cookies. It of course has an exception list to the first two options.

Firefox has those 3 options and a new one that may cause funny reactions on some sites. The 4 firefox option basically amounts to fooling the website into thinking that it is accepting all cookies, while in fact it is only allowing those cookies per session. In other words when I log off, the cookies are gone even though the website thinks they were set permanently.

That is extremely simplified, and I am not sure of the exact reaction of that setting across multiple tabs. Extremely new versions of firefox have made even less information passable from one tab to another due to a recent security problem resulting from inter tab communication. This may in fact be the cause. I usually run the nightly builds, and my Firefox is usually no more than a week old. I'm sure the guys that run the site can test it though.

(Gasp!) Firefox had a security problem? I thought only IE had those! I switched to Firefox to be rid of those problems, and now you tell me I have to download a new version every week?

This isn't, as far as I know, a problem relating to anyone's browser.

It seems harmless. And we will remove the cloned usernames. But I'm checking some things to see what may have caused them. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
