Clonking noise when brakes applied

Hi Gents, I've got a clonking noise when I initially apply the brakes to my Jinma 284. I can actually feel something moving inside the drum through my foot when I have it depressed on the brake pedal.
It's as if a shoe is loose, could that be the case?

Actually, I would have guessed you had disc type brakes. Do you know for a fact that they're drum type? And does it pull to the side opposite where the noise is coming from?

Andy,

Greg is correct, there are two types of brakes on the 200 series. The disk type is the most common. The drum is common when you order the tractor with turf tires.

Before tearing into the brakes, check your rear wheel bolts. It is common for the bolts that hold the inner and outer rims together to loosen and cause a clunking noise.

Hi there, Valve problem? I hope you mean the problem I had with the hydraulic oil being forced out of a breather hole behind the seat. If not this explanation can be ignored. Before I started using the 284 I fitted an external/additional hydraulic oil filter. I was led to belive the standard filter wasn't up to much, because the gearbox and hydraulics for steering and FL were using the same oil. The standard hydraulic filter is fine because it does not filter the gear box oil. Hence no metal filings floating around. I'm told that paper filters are not the best for hydraulic oil. Anyway, I removed the paper filter assembly, replaced the transmission/hydraulic oil for normal hydraulic oil and that seems to have solved my problem. I opened the pump and there are some score lines on the inner wall, I think that damage was done when the tractor was assembled, in the first few minuets. Lack of oil in the system. I told the mechanic he should not connect the FL until the oil had time to circulate through the system, but he thought he knew better than me!

Hi Greg, Didn't know I had an Aston Martin on my hands! Disk brakes, I'll have to check that one out. Sounds good, there is no reason why not, after all the system is totally enclosed. That's actually good news, I'll have a peek now just out of curiosity. No, it doesn't pull to one side, that's why I haven't already dived in. Thanks for your reply. Andy

Hi again, These tractors take some abuse with regards to reliability, I would just like to say my tractor has never stopped working and I'm delighted with it.

fwiw, my 284 LE makes that same clunking noise/feel too - lug nuts are fine. I have however, driven off with the e-brake on a few times..... Man, i'm really happy with this machine too!

Hi there, I had too much play in one side, that's all it was. I never noticed it pulling to one side or the other, but I suppose it must have been. I did a test, after checking the wheel bolts, freewheeled down hill touching the brakes as I went. One wheel was locking before the other. The noise was when the slack side came in. It's fine nowwwwwwwwwwwwwcrunch.
No, really, the noise has gone. It's easy to adjust the brakes, bolts are accessible from the top. All the best. Andy
