NH TC40DA w/all options except ss
Its been awhile since I posted here. Been so busy and having so much fun with my new NH, no time to post. Has anyone here experienced hearing a clunking noise from the rear of the tractor? It almost sounds like a loose wheel, or maybe a bad universal joint on a drive shaft. Doesn't happen all the time, but I've been hearing it frequently enough, that its got me concerned. It almost sounds like somethings loose. Any TC owners hear a similar noise from their tractors? Pete

Pete the only time I get any type of noise like that is if I have a heavy implement attached and it works just a bit from side to side.

Thanks Mike. Maybe thats what I'm hearing. Its possible the 3 point arms are banging. I'll have to physically grab them and try swinging them to see if it produces the noise. I'll let you know how I make out.

Do you have cast iron wheel weights? If so, are they tightly secured in place?

My tractor developed a very loud rear end clunking sound that was occurring with each revolution of the rear tires. I initially thought I had broken something inside the axle housing and was thinking "that's gonna be an expensive trip to the dealer"!

It was during my own diagnostic procedures trying to figure out which side of the rear end was making the noise that I discovered the noise was actually coming from the stack of three 110 lb cast iron weights which had worked slightly loose and were banging around inside the rim with each revolution of the tire!

Once I found the actual problem it was an easy fix. I just removed and properly reinstalled all the weights, but especially the first weight which is the one that actually attaches to the wheel and was the one that had worked just a little bit loose.

Whew! :D

This is probably not it, but I've heard some clunking a few times in relation to using the differential lock. You might step on the pedal a few times to make sure it is working and returns properly.

If you haven't already, I would suggest checking the wheel bolts for tightness. If this is a brand new tractor it is not uncommon for the bolts to require tightening once in the first hours of use.
