How do you measure the clutch freeplay? I know how to make the adjustments on the linkage but I am confused /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif as how to measure the freeplay.

The freeplay is the distance the clutch pedal travels downward until it starts operating the clutch mechanism. Ususally you can feel this, and easy spot at the top and then gets harder to push at one point. That easy travel is the freeplay. Measure the pedal height and then measure the height when you feel it start engaging the clutch mechanism. The difference is the freeplay.

Does this adjustment have to be done when tractor is running?

Do it while the tractor is shut off (in all the cases I know of anyway) I've owned dozens of tractors. Worked on HUNDREDS more. In every case I can remember, there needs to be about 1" of free travel in the clutch pedal before you start operating the clutch mechanism.

I'd HIGHLY recommend consulting your particular tractor's manual (Owners, or better yet, SHOP manual) for the correct RECOMMENDED free play.
