Use it for bush hogging, baling, move manure, usual stuff . . . not a heavy user (I don't think).

Noticed some gear clashing in recent uses, but figured I wasn't clutch down all the way or something.

Today took it out after it sat for several weeks after baling and we had to replace a tire. Headed out to bush hog, (no problem getting to field in 2nd or 3rd probably). After I got out to the field and went to put it in 3rd to start up I couldn't get it into 3rd, lots of grindy clash. Same thing with 5th. But it went into 1st and 2nd fine. Also went into reverse. (Was thinking I might have to back to all the way back to the house.) I got it turned around okay (in 2nd) and discovered at one point it went into 3rd fine again. But when I tried 5 -- nope. And then no more 3rd. So came back in (fortunately) in 2nd.

It was late, so hubby hasn't looked at or listened to it. (Learned not to mess with broken things at the end of the day.) So will be checking it out tomorrow.

How bad do y'all think it is? Clutch? Or transmission? :(

Thanks.

Put the PTO in neutral and try again. If you're lucky you are simply experiencing the inertia of the spinning mower blade, keeping gears spinning long after you expected them to stop.

I hope it's that simple ...

Well good news! :cool2: I mowed the second pasture today. Still have to lick the bowl around the edges etc., but did the majority of the 2 fields yesterday and today. Many thanks.

Husband fiddled with adjustment on clutch pedal and that seemed to improve it greatly. When I did run into difficulty getting into gear I tried the PTO /neutral release thing and yup, that definitely worked. Big relief here.

Question: Why is it a problem now?

Additional question on bush hog -- the last year or so when I release the PTO there's all kinds of clanging back there like something's loose. Didn't know if it was gear box, (seems not) or blades or what. We checked underneath as best we could and the blades seem secure .. any idea what that is about? (Doesn't happen all the time, but it's frequent.)

The clutch pedal should have appx 5/8" free movement at top of pedal. Would a video of your clanging noise be possible?

It could have all of a sudden happened if the clutch wore some and needed adjustment.

Is the clanging and banging as you release the clutch to first start the pto or when your taking it out of PTO gear? If it's when you first start sometimes bthose blades get rusted or stuck with grass folded back and will shake and bang untill straightened out.

If it's when taking PTO out of gear, your useing the clutch when you do this right? Cause it should drastically slowed the actual gears and shaft spinning when you take it out of gear.

Other though is maybe ujoints need replacing, but honestly there should be no load on the pto when you shift out cause you have already clutched and it is just free spin of the implement at that point, the slower it goes or stopped the better those gears will be quiet and easy to come apart when you shift.

Hey Winston -- I am headed to the west coast in a couple days, so it will probably have to wait til I get back. But yeah, I think I can catch it on my phone.

Hey Clemson -- as I noted to Winston, I am headed to the west coast for a week so will get back to you when I get home. Thanks for the additional info (and Winston, too.)

Was this happening when the clutch was out of adjustment? If so it could be that it was partially turning just like your transmission gears when it was out of adjustment. So if it was before you were literally just talking the lever out while it was spinning causing the load to be taken away quickly.

Feedback from your PTO/mower back to the tranny gears is even more likely if the clutch was out of adjustment and no overrun clutch is installed on the PTO.
Good luck with it when you get home!

I didn't think to ask about a over run clutch. Good point.
