Additional question on bush hog -- the last year or so when I release the PTO there's all kinds of clanging back there like something's loose. Didn't know if it was gear box, (seems not) or blades or what. We checked underneath as best we could and the blades seem secure .. any idea what that is about? (Doesn't happen all the time, but it's frequent.)

Burning Bushes overrun clutch could be bad or going bad. If she has the old style she may be able to grease it. On the old style there is a Allen head cap that needs to be removed and then add a grease fitting so your able to use a grease gun. Can't have a grease fitting sticking out because it's sure to get broken in a matter of time. Use a Allen wrench to remove the plug/cap then screw in a Grease fitting in it's place. Then a grease gun to pump in the grease. Here's a pic. of where to look for it. Ph. camera so it's the best I could do. If you have it your see it.

My OR clutch has the grease fitting in it permanently. Now I say it will snap it off. But luckily I have never broken mine off. It's been that way over ten years and I have bush hogged some big thick stuff including lots of trees and thick bones and overgrown fields esp when I first got it when I was reclaiming my fields. It came with the fitting installed. But good tip Carey in case I replace it and it's this design. I would not have realized to remove it to install a fitting if it was not made note of on the ORC.

I don't have a PTO shaft guard so I remove the grease fitting. If I did have a guard I would most likely leave the grease fitting in. The overrun I use is pretty old and my guess was made before the Guard and ROP.. I learned about it from on here Yrs. ago not long after I bought it. And come to think about it further a grease fitting won't lock down without hitting the bearings and preventing it from turning so I have to remove it. I could washer it up. But then I'm asking for trouble.

I have no PTO gaurd either. I don't quite understand the need. Who sticks their hand into a moving PTO shaft? I could see the benefit from this GS like a neck tie or hoodie strings maybe, but who farms in a tie? And when around a car and in hood running I tuck strings into the neck. Don't want to get caught up in a belt and my face sucked into a moving belt!! Yikes!

Be careful the Graphic equipment I worked on some has hundreds of grease fittings. I've actually broke them off before. With the Gun! Some are really hard to get to. Broke them off a few times in the past 30yrs. to be honest. But there replaceable. I can't imagine why yours isn't.? If it did brake drill it out and Helicoil it. :2cents:

If you broke it you could probably easy spin it out with an easy out or left hand bit with the hole in the center.

Everyone I've actually broken off they've all came out rather easily. You just tighten them up and don't use a lot of Torque so if you have to remove them they do come out... The tongue is what breaks so the threads are still there as the tightening nut is intact....
