Clymer Repair Manuals vs JD Shop Manual

Hi, I have a '96 770 and I am looking to buy a shop manual and while doing a google search I found this repair manual with a preview by google books

I looked at the book on Amazon and the review was not very positive.

It covers the 670, 770, 870, 970, 1070 and that is part of the negative review mentioned above. The review says the manual covers too many models and does not have the detail needed for any one model.

Honestly, if the repair was really, really involved like rebuilding the motor I would not do it myself as I am afriad I would screw it up. but other repairs to the brakes, drive trains and other in depth repairs.

Does anyone have this manual? What do you think of it?

The OEM John Deere repair manual for the 670-770 has been available on eBay (2 copies) the past 2 weeks.

Just glancing at one of the auctions - I think it was $14.50 or so plus shipping ~$5.

The OEM repair manual for the 870-970-1070 was excellent and - IMO; essential for owning a tractor.

I only have experience with the Clymer and Hayes on cars and truck...and have ALWAYS been disappointed with then. The info is always to broad and never specific...So I started buying the FSM's (factory service manual) for all the vehicles I own and have always been happy.

The JD manual on CD for my 4110 is packed with details and color pictures, along with a "Theory of operation" for every section that describes in detail every aspect of the machine-a real bargain for the $70 I paid for it IMHO.

Definitely get the CD - as kennyd mentioned - if it's available for your 770. You can print out multiple copies. One for the shop, one for the house. And when they get torn and greasy.. print another one.

Get the Deere manual, like others have said about Clymer and Haynes...they leave out too much important information.
