CNH offer a break controller kit for trailers??

Anyone got the skinny? If they do.. any idea on price and models they fit. I've got a 7610s and a 5000 that i wouldn't mind having an e-brake controller on.. if it wasn't cost prohibitive.

i know i could hardwire a cheapy controller set to medium and just use the panic button... but...

??? why do that when the one of the best controlers out ther currently is the Prodigy initial controler. Theres a little weight that slides forward based on the stopping momentum of the vehical. (the idea being pannic breaking = more assist.. vs stop and go traffic)

should work wether your driving a tractor or a truck.

Any brake controller I've seen operates off the brake light switch otherwise it would apply the brakes when going down a hill whether you wanted them to or not. Maby someone came up with a switch kit you could mount on a tractor.It would be a good idea. A couple of years ago a locale kid got killed on a hayrack ride when they went down a hill and the hay rack started pushing the small tractor they were using and lost controll and jackknifed.

Yes, that is correct.
The other option may be the Jordan Ultima controller. It uses a cable to the brake pedal to activate the brakes, thus no inertia switch involved. I have been using one for 2 years now and it's the smoothest controller I have ever used-no time delay or jerking in slow stop-and-go traffic. Also there is no complicated electronics to fail...Made in USA also!

I've also got a Jordan brake controller and love the way it works, but I have a warning about using it on a VW Touareg . . . DON'T DO IT if you have the Navigation computer in your Touareg. My Jordan unit will not work properly with the computer system on my Touareg so I moved the Jordan controller to my Mountaineer. I looked at the Prodigy units and simply didn't like them, they are very very popular, but the Jordan is just about the perfect controller for anything that doesn't have a complicated computer system. In inertial control units, of which the Prodigy is probably the best unit, seem to be lacking on bumpy surfaces or steep grades. I'm not saying they don't work, I'm saying they don't work as well/smoothly as a Jordan unit.

no its inertial based. like in my HST machine i can slow down or stop without touching the breaks. the change in inertia is what activates the breaks. there is nothing that connects to the break peddle.

If you were to down shift and dump the clutch (to slow down) the inertial switch would "feel" that and start to apply the breaks proportionally to how fast you were decelerating.

This is why its better than the old school "timed" controllers.

So what happens if I hit a bump in the road.. it hits the trailer breaks? thus slowing me down.. thus applying more breaks? Not sure I like a controller that thinks for me...

what if I am driving and hit a soft patch of sand ( and slow down ) I do this often by the way, on the trip to and from my pasture..

well theres a threshold setting. which allows you to control how much or how quickly the breaks come on for a given change in interia (ie you dont need the same breaking power with an empty 14K trailer as you do a full one)

what you speek of (hitting a soft patch and slowing down) would be the same as just costing to a stop or stop-and-go traffic. were the controler does well at knowing when NOT to apply the breaks as opposed to the old school kind were i had no idea what was going on other than you touched the break pedal.

You were right, there is a signal that gets picked up by the unit to know "when" to apply the brakes. This is normally the brake light switch from the brake pedal. Unless your tractor has brake lights, you would still be applying the brakes manually like you were saying - better than no brakes, but still less then ideal. Heck I though I was doing good wiring up a 7-way RV connector including turn signals/emergency flashers & tail lights and then the best was a "power wire" that I then can plug my sprayer into.
