I have a 2007 RTV900W6 and I was reading some older posts about installing a coast valve kit.

Coast Valve Kit for Kubota RTV 900 / RTV 1100 / RTV 1140: SideBySideStuff.com

It sounds like an improvement to me.

My question is; Has anyone installed a coast valve and caused damage to the transmission as a result?

I'm just a little apprehensive when it comes to aftermarket improvements.

Thanks, Bill

Bill, Don't blame you on the apprehension. However, there have been numerous forum members that have installed coast valves and I've not heard of one having an issue. Most trans failures that I've seen have been due to full-out abuse or lack of maintenance.

I left my RTV as-is since I actually like the engine braking.

I'm with timswi on this. When I first got my RTV1100, the engine braking seemed whiplash-inducing, but voer the past couple of years I've learned some throttle finesse and no longer see it as a disadvantage or irritation.

I installed a coast valve in my RTV in 2008, about 3 weeks after I bought it.
I have never had any kind of problem since then, transmission or otherwise.

Wouldn’t ever go back to the original set up, too herky jerky for me.

One other advantage--I'll never have to replace the brakes since I virtually never have to use them.

Ain't that the truth!

If there aren't any adverse affects, I think I may give it a try.
If I'm unhappy I can always change it back.

Generally speaking we don't have any operation issues. Just release the throttle slowly....

A few weeks ago my girlfriend reached to get something that fell off the seat. As she bent down the machine took a bump and her foot came off the pedal. Fortunately she was wearing sunglasses which protected her eye somewhat from (I think) the shifter. Needless to say she looked like an escapee for a Tarrington cigarette add.
She has been operating that machine since it was new and had plenty of experience. I doubt she'll ever make that mistake again.

There is an old post somewhere that shows how to adjust the factory valve. I did my neighbors several years ago.
Matter of removing valve and adjusting the set screw I believe out?

I read through some older posts that described the adjustment you are referring to. They also mentioned possible cavitation issues associated with that valve adjustment.
For that reason, I decided not to try that as a solution.

Since I haven't heard any negative comments on the replacement valve, other than the loss of engine breaking, I decided to order one.

Well my coast valve arrived today. It only took me 15-20 min to install.

I won't say that I've done extensive testing, but after running it around a bit, I really like it. There is a little lag (not much) if you let off then step on the accelerator.
Getting out of one gear and into another especially reverse was always problematic. Now it shifts easily like it's unloaded.

Time will tell, but I think we have a winner.

940 hours on our 2006 Kubota RTV 900 with coast valve. Not one issue.

I just bought a 1 owner RTV 900 with 560 hours on it and it is great except that I live on a very steep hillside and if I need to shift from 1 gear range to another I can't without stopping the engine. I've read a bunch of threads here and other forums from a Google search and have seen several mentions of a "compression relief valve knob" on the dash.If my machine has this knob I can't find it. Can anyone confirm the existence of such a knob or give any other advice on this problem? It is the hydraulic utility valve Turf model if that matters. The previous owner and I have never used this feature and he is no help as to the relief valve knob.
TIA Jim
PS yes I changed all oils and filters even though it had only been 100 hrs.approx. It is a 2005 year model.

About center on the dashboard near the bottom, there should be a knob that resembles choke knob. If you still can't find it, You can PM me and I'll take a photo. If you can get a hold of a owners manual I'm sure it's shown there.
I think there is a placard that tells you how to operate it. Basically you hold your foot on the brake and pull out on the knob. This unloads the transmission allowing you to shift ranges or go into reverse.
For what it's worth, I needed to go through this procedure all the time. Since I installed the coast valve shifting is much easier and there is no more "binding" in gear.
It's been about three months since I put the coast valve in, and it's working great.

Thank you for the reply. There is only a cigarette lighter in the area you describe. I do have the owners manual, which the p.o. said was the only manual he got with it when he bought it new, and there is nothing in it about the trans. or shifting only a service schedule.
I have owned 4 Kubota tractors and an RTV1140 and had all the manuals for them and this is the poorest and most incomplete one I've seen. It makes me leery of buying the W.S.M or parts book.

Jim, I suspect that the reason you can't find the control knob is that it's no longer there.

I found this posting on TBN;

https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums...6750-rtv-900-difficult-change-selector-2.html

"Being stuck in gear and difficult to impossible to shift into "N" without killing the engine is an issue that has plagued the RTV since the getgo. It is a result of torque still being applied to the transmission as when stopping on an incline or as is often the case when plowing snow. The original RTV (like my 04 model) had no solution other than fine tuning the shifting and playing with the 'creep' (search this forum for detail). Around 06 they added the pressure relief knob on the dash which if adjusted correctly greatly improved the shifting issue. Later models moved the pressure relief to the break pedal and again the shifting issue is greatly improved provided it is adjusted correctly. Too bad kubota didn't see it necessary to permanently fix this issue in the recent new models."

Lots of info concerning your problem in this thread.

Best, Bill

Thank you, this is what I suspected. On the 1140 I had for a short time when there was a shifting problem you could turn the steering wheel and that would help.It was a 2010 model. But not with this machine, if you are on any kind of grade it just locks up.I really appreciate the referral to the thread and will spend some more time searching.
Again thanks for the help,Jim
