I have a new Woods RD72 and I would like to coat the underside of the deck with something to protect it and extend the life of it. I have read a few articles on some products that keeps the grass from sticking to it (EZ-Slide), but I would like something that will not allow any rust to form either. Any ideas?

A QUICK THOUGHT--
how about the liquid bed liners?
I understand good adhesion and would think that the rubber like coating would resist nicking and chiping.

Maybe some other TBNers have thoughts on that. (or tried it)

I would think that IMRON urethane paint would be the deal. That stuff is tough as nails and goes on slick. BUT, you need to either paint outside or use a supplied air respirator. The catalyst is nasty and is not stopped by a carbon mask.

If you are more into just cleaning it easily. Why not get a hose nipple and weld it to the deck. Then when you are done mowing, hook up the garden hose, start the water and the blades. The grass and junk will be blasted out. You do need to put the nipple in the correct spot.

Clean up would be easy, but rust might be a problem.

if you do a search here at TBN, you'll find several older threads on this subject...

the bottom line from most who did this was that it was not worth the time effort and cost, since nothing seemed to really last for very long.

I did the EZ Slide paint, and it was worn away in a few weeks.

I have done the Graphite Paint on my trackhoe buckets , dump bed, and wheelbarrow. It has done well on all. It is much tougher than I expected. It really doesn't Slide all that well when coated with Southern Illinois clay. It wasn't too expensive and easy to do. I'll probably redo it when it starts to wear.

There are products that do what you want, but tend to be cost prohibitive.
I have a friend who works for a place where they use a coating to extend the life of pumps in a paper mill. The pumps carry abrasive material all day long, and wear prematurely without their coating. The don't do it very often, but the next time they are coating some, I hope to get my leaf collection blower coated on the inside to slow the progression of sand eating away at it. Would also be great for a mower, but from what I hear the stuff isn't cheap. They also do hard chrome at that shop, which would work, but also not cheap.
Knowing the right person is the key to some of these coatings...

I agree with Renob about Fluid Film. My JD dealer sprays every tractor that leaves his place with it. I spray the stuff on everything. It does a good job of protecting, things are easier to clean off, and you get very little rust.

End of the mowing season. Cleaning up the mower deck and prepping it for next year.

Two photos: before and after graphite painting. One shows what was left of last season's application after power washing. I put two coats on before storing. Grass will stick in places, but it comes off pretty easily.
