( I finally used JB Weld and formed a plastic cover over the channel button so it can't move. I never needed to change the channel anyway and when they're turned on they always start on channel one.)

Mosey, I don't know what brand radios you have but my all my Motorolas have a "lock" feature. So I set them all up and turn then lock feature on. You can still use the PTT button but you cannot change the channel. Check out your owners manuals if you haven't already.

I have Cobra brand. The ones I have are the cheaper ones, I'm sure they make a better model. I did check the manual before I got the glue out and there is no "lock" feature. It sounds like you have a better quality set then I do! I'm OK with them though, they work fine for my purposes. We use them when we go for walks in the woods and the kids have fun with them. I also keep one with me on when I'm on the tractor so my wife can get a hold of me if she needs to. They work great in the Walmart Superstore when my wife and I split up and then need to find each other again! I've never needed to change the channel yet and we've had them for a couple years.

( Snapper, another radio to think about is marine vhf. I have two Uniden Atlantis handhelds that have NiMH rechargeable batteries. Have had them for about a year now, and no battery problems. The range is also great. Wife got in the car and drove about 3 miles before we lost signal.

No license needed, plus you can use them on your boat.

Best not get caught using marine VHF radios for non marine use. That's a no-no and penalties can include stiff fines if caught.

Are you likely to get caught, probably not, but it's not legal!

Let us not forget the new service MURS, VHF 5 channels, no license 2 watts of power and external antennas.

A better choice than Marine band because it's legal! The radios are not much different either.

GaryM, I had no idea this was illegal. The radios did not come with any FCC rules or regulations. I checked to make sure you did not need a license, but it never occured to me that using them would not be legal.

I have a small pond on my farm, wonder if I could use that to justify their use???? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Marine radio no longer need a license if use aboard most pleasure craft that are not for hire, or you dont venture into canadian waters. Marine radio are for use aboard ship only. Dock to ship is not legal. There are license you can get for fixed station use, like marina but those are limited in use.

Well I got me a set of them tonight.. I decided to go with motorola.. A t5400 to be exact.. motorola t5400 Nice radio.. Lots of features and good distance.. Real clear.. Under 20 bucks a piece.. I will proably get the battery up grade some day.. Any idea what model these use to be?? trying to figure if these are some of the ones like you all have..
