Tractor Sizing Cold Starting

Hi all,
How is everyone making out with the cold starting this time of year, any modifications or aids? On my FOTON I have a coolant heater and glowplugs . Here's a link to a cold start video at -30

that was pretty impressive start @ -30*C!!! how many hours on your foton? i have recently been looking at foton's and might buy one in the near future. just wondering how you like the foton and what you think of the tractor. nice video and effects! :thumbsup:

no snow here this year, global warming kicking into high gear I guess. I have 2002 JINMA that fires up just about as easy. last year was 1st year w block heater made a bit of warm up and oil pressure work well... usually was just glow plugs and a crack open of the de-compression lever... I started it this way many times at -20F and at least once at -30 when I was stuck and had HAD to pull out the car which had high sided on snow...

That was a COLD snow plowing day for sure as I figured it was running might as well remove the snow drifts and clean out around the car... that was 2 or so years back and I actually stuck a heat lamp shinning onto the injector pump for about 20 min while I got warmed up and dressed for working out in the cold. I dont have a cab either and had some COLD feet after the 300 yard walk up the drive in 14" of snow... took a while plowing getting it out, and no I dont have a nice snow blower like you...

This is about how my Jinma 284 starts. Coldest I can remember is -20 f

I have a Katz lower radiator hose heater and glow plugs.

My massy has to be plugged in about ten minutes and fires right up. My Zetor fires up any time I ask it to. When it's -30*f it cranks for about ten seconds. Without plugging it in or using ether. I hate ether. A lot of good motors have been destroyed by using ether. My case 930 stays up at the father in laws, where he has to plug it in for about 3 hours, then uses a constant spray of ether the entire time he cranks the motor. Didn't used to be that way. He just never got out to go plug it in, so when it wouldn't start, out came the ether. Yo should hear the knock in that motor. My big tractor is running just enough feed the 1 ton bales and get parked back in the hay shed.

That radiator heater is a God sent. Works like a charm.

What's the best way of figuring out your radiator hose size?

Measure the i.d.

Circumference by pi will give you the outside diameter. Subtract 2x for wall thickness.
Or the hard way: Remove hose and measure.

Runnin a foton 254 up here in Saskatchewan Canada and this tractor will start right away with glow plug for 20 sec and rad heater plugged in for an hour or so. This winter has been unusually warm with very little snow. Last week we more commonly had arctic cold -48C with wind chill. A few minor issues with the tractor since I've owned new with about 250 hours but always reliable.
