Funny you should mention batteries Dave.

Last night I made my list of needed items. Once complete I noticed how much I rely on batteries just to go ice fishing.

3 deep cell to run the fish house lights, stereo and occasional appliance
4 AA for the GPS
2 AA for the Digital Camera
4 D for the fans to keep air moving (and the floor warm)
3 rechargeable to run the flash light and drill we bring up in case repairs are needed.
2 small deep cell batteries to run the underwater camera
2 D for the handheld depth finder. I use this during the day when I go out in the portable house looking for fish.

If it was just about fish--I guess I'd be better off taking my battery money and going to the local grocery store--I think on a cost per pound basis I could do better.

But of course it's like hunting. For me the fish or venison in the pan or the bird in the crock pot is the icing. The experience is what does it for me. Going outside at 1 a.m. when you are 6 miles out on a frozen lake (no sounds except the occasional ice cracking) or playing cribbage with friends while waiting for the rattle reels to sound off--it's a great time.

I used to fish a lot when I was younger. I lived up north then. How do you get out there ? on the tractor ? I always wanted to give stuergon fishing a try with those big spears in the winter. Here ice fishing is a big deal. Like Tippy Town on Houghton Lake every year. Best of luck on those perch. Oh, and speaking of Cribbidge I had bought a board this summer but forgot how to play. Finally broke down and bought the " house of Hoyle". I guess I cant make my own rules any more ! Dave

We drive out in the trucks, but I can keep this tractor related by saying I've seen them use tractors to smooth the ice ridges out at the landings. Last Saturday I drove on the lake via an access with a pressure ridge. At 10 a.m. the ridge was relatively smooth. By 9 a.m. the next morning, the ridge was about 4 feet high. The ridges on shore are not a big deal, but the ones that are 3/4 of a mile out need to have a bridge over them or you may not make it back.

I guess any lake that has in excess of 200 square miles of surface area needs to be respected no matter how cold it gets.

Here's a small ice ridge on shore. This area was nearly flat the day before.

Well--I didn't bring my camera in today, but I'll attach a pic from 2 weeks ago.

I'm attaching this pic for a frame of reference. This past Saturday the winds picked up and blew between 25 and 35 mph all through the night. When we got up Sunday a.m. we couldn't open the door. Seems the wind took what little snow was on the lake and created a drift that went about a third of the way up the door. I left the drivers side window of my truck about 1/8 of an inch down and even though the window wasn't facing the wind, I still had about 3 inches of snow on the front seat. Amazing what wind can do if given 6 or 7 miles of flat surface to blow across.

Anyway--tons of fish on the underwater camera, but none in the pan. No bite--most likely due to weather front.

More pics later this week.
